Still Getting My Learning On

I learned this most valuable tip from Son2 recently and thought I would pass it on.

I was doing laundry, started doing other chores and completely forgot about the load of clothes in the dryer. If it had been towels or sheets I would have just folded them and put them away, but this was a load of clothes that were wrinkled beyond the folding stage. I was kicking myself in the butt for forgetting about them and dreading the thoughts of ironing everything when he offered this brilliant solution. Put the clothes back in the dryer with 3 or 4 ice cubes and dry for 5 minutes.

Voila! The ice melted and provided just enough steam coupled with the rotation of the clothes in the dryer to knock out the wrinkles. How come I never thought of that. Slow learner, I guess?

  1. I'm such a poor housekeeper I would have worn the things extra wrinkled! it's a great tip though, I might use it on a day I want to look presentable :)

  2. It is a great tip. I suspect one gained through experience. Like kylie I probably would have opted for the crinkle-cut look.

  3. I rarely dry anything that needs to look unwrinkled to wear. I hang those clothes. However, on the off chance I do have clothes I don't want to have wrinkles, I just take out a garment, carry it to the sink, and wet my hands and wipe and sprinkle water on one garment. I will remember the ice cube trick.

    1. I hang and use the dryer on an equal number of items, but that particular day the wrinkles had wrinkles and I had to do something.

  4. I do another version of that. If I need to dewrinkle, I wet a hand towel or something similar, add to the load and dry again. It does the same thing of adding moisture to the heat to dewrinkle.

  5. I've redried clothes many times to fluff them up, but never heard of putting ice cubes in to make steam! Genius!

  6. I haven't use my home iron in ages. I spritz clothes and lazy me, turns the dryer back on, but I like the ice idea. Probably not the greenest, but we do what we need to do right?

    1. I know it takes substantial energy to heat an iron so I look at turning the fryer on a few extra minutes as energy saving over the amount of time it would take me to iron a load. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  8. Wow I love that tip. My laundry is right next to the shop so I don't often have this problem. But when I do I will try this!

    1. My laundry room is a destination trip on the other side of the house world so I often forget items in the dryer, but most loads don't matter.

  9. I usually just turn the dryer on for another 5-10 minutes and takes out the wrinkles for the most part. Never thought of ice cubes!

  10. Clever lad! I guess I must be the only person that doesn't mind ironing then - even when there were 5 of us at home. Weird eh!

  12. Great tip! I've heard of adding a damp towel, but first time I've heard of the ice cubes trick! At present, my dryer doesn't work (it will tumble the clothes but it doesn't heat up!) so I hang everything to dry. I don't mind ironing, but, I generally don't iron my clothes.

    1. I hate ironing with a passion and only do it on demand. I do hang a lot of my clothes, but I dry all my pants and slacks.
