This was a transition week after having Son1 and Pip here. Even though they left on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I woke still thinking they were here. I am not the brightest bulb in the box until I have been awake a couple of minutes.
What was planned:
Grilled tripletail, baked potato, coleslaw
leftover conecuh sausage, leftover cheese biscuits, coleslaw
Veggie dinner TBD
BLT salad
Spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, garlic toast

How far I veered off the planned path:
Monday: Pip had one last request of things she wanted to do while here, so off we went to Starbucks. She has some pink drink she likes to drink and wanted a grilled cheese from there. I had no idea Starbucks even had a grilled cheese option, but I am not a Starbucks regular. I only go twice a year, once for a caramel macchiato and another time at Christmas for their peppermint mocha.
I love coffee, but I am not a fancy coffee drinker. I make it at home every morning like I prefer it, strong and black, not burnt tasting like Starbucks plain coffee tastes to me.
Mid-day we had to leave to get them to the airport. It is always hard saying goodbye, but we had them for 2 weeks and that filled my cup until the next time we see them.
We got home and rested because we both were tired. I did pick some of the bigger pears from the tree in the front yard, then decided to research what to do with them. I need to harvest them all soon and need, plans in place for long term, as well as short term storage.
The tree is covered this year, but a mocking bird is nesting there and she is not fond of me being around. I don't mind sharing the tree and some pears with her, and will not bother her babies, but would appreciate her not dive bombing me.
Monday dinner: We had some food in the fridge that needed to be eaten.
Leftover conecuh sausage, coleslaw, cheese biscuits
Tuesday: We woke and hoped to get out early to beat the heat. What a foolish thought. It was hot and humid at the start of the day. We had been missing Benny and Brenda's produce stand because the rains kept them from setting up on their usual days closest to my house. I was getting desperate for some good tomatoes (the ones in our yard are not really producing yet) . We ran by and they were there, but without their usual glut of produce. The rains have really affected their crop growth with some crops molding in the fields. Though I was happy for the tomatoes, I really wanted yellow squash and cucumbers, but they have not been producing well this year.
After the produce run we ran by Pilleteri's to grab some of their ground chuck/bacon mix. We have never had it before but 2 different trusted friends told us how good it is so we decided to give it a try.
Next we headed to Snapper Grabber to see if they had any tripletail. It was our lucky day.
Tuesday dinner: Because our fish monger did have tripletail in their case, dinner planned itself. Honestly though, even if they had not had it I would have just bought grouper because we love it also.
Grilled tripletail, baked potato, tossed salad
Wednesday: I did a bunch of laundry, then talked with MBS while I cleaned out the laundry room refrigerator. After it was cleaned and the many loads of clothes I was doing Wednesday were done, I spent time reviewing our July schedule, browsing recipes for potential meals, some advance cooking, and catching up on some reading.
Wednesday dinner: I found a lot of things in the laundry room fridge that needed to be eaten, cooked, or frozen.
Leftover collards, corn on the cob, pink eyed peas, cornbread, peach cobbler
Thursday: I have to stop staying up so late. It was 4 before I finally went to bed, so I slept until a little after 9. Bad me!
Got up, had coffee (needed a caffeine i.v drip for I was still tired) talked with My Beloved Sister then got ready for the day. Cute clothes and summer heat are not mutually inclusive, but I refuse to compromise and am just very thankful for a really good car a/c.
TheHub and I ran a few errands, picked up the ribs for the fourth (yes I let someone else do the smoking and I pick them up cooked and ready to eat. It is worth every penny). After we grabbed the ribs we stopped by JaWanda's Pies in Inverness. I was not, nor am I ever interested in a sweet potato pie, but she also makes delicious pound cakes. Again I paid for the convenience of not having to bake, and again it was worth it. I do not mind spending money if there is value in it, and after the past two weeks I am putting a price on my time. I had rather be spending the fourth swimming and having fun than cooking.
Thursday dinner: Thanks to the refrigerator clean out and advance cooking, dinner was almost ready and only took about 5 minutes to heat and throw together.
Something like if a fajita and nachos had a really weird baby
Friday: Happy 4th of July if you live in the States and Happy Friday (or Saturday) to everyone else. Hope all of you had a good day regardless of what side of the pond you live on.
We had a day of swimming and enjoying family. Son2 and DIL2 were here along with MBS. The day was hot but the pool felt great.
Friday dinner: We had just one meal for the day because we knew it would be a big meal, and it was.
BBQ ribs, potato salad, collard greens, vidalia onion pie, watermelon, chocolate pound cake, ice cream
Saturday: TheHub and I got up and ran a few errands. ( I left before coffee which is always dangerous for anyone around me) We ran by Benny's produce stand and he was not there. Brenda had told us they would only be there if they had enough to harvest, so I am assuming the weather (rain) still was impacting their yield.
We had a few more things to do before we came home to eat lunch, then rested, read and did a few chores. TheHub left to play 9 holes of golf and we had planned on swimming after he got home, but he ran into some friends on the course and golf was extended. Did not matter at all to me, but once it got closer to 6, I decided to nix swimming and just get dinner started.
Saturday dinner: I don't mind swimming before dinner if all I am going to do is warm leftovers but I was going to cook and I don't like coming in from the pool, taking a shower then starting dinner from scratch. It is never about eating late, but cleaning the kitchen late really pisses me off.
Hamburger patties, french fries, cucumber tomato onion salad
Sunday: We woke in plenty of time to get to church, but right before time to get dressed we decided to stay home and watch it online. Since it was the 4th weekend, we only had one service and no Sunday School.
The day was beautiful and I decided the pool was calling me. MBS came over and we swam laps, then just floated and talked. It felt great!
Later in the afternoon I talked with Sluggy and caught up on her trip. Now I know my southern rear end does not need to go near the Arctic Circle__ever. A summertime high of 47? No thanks!
Sunday dinner: This was a reheat and eat type of night.
Ribs, collards, potato salad, baked beans
What might possibly happen this week? Because we might swim right before dinner I want things I can have ready in a jiffy.
1. Big salad meal
2. Veggie meal
3. Grilled tuna, tossed salad, green beans, mashed potatoes
4. Zucchini cheese strata, tossed salad
5. Stuffed peppers, coleslaw, mashed potatoes
6. We might be going tn Nashville and if we do we will eat out some
7. Ditto

Have a great week staying on plan, going off plan, or with no plan at all.
May all your weeds be wildflowers.

I'm glad your cup is filled. That has to be a difficult goodbye. Pears? I wonder how pear sauce would be?
ReplyDeleteIt is hard saying goodbye because I know it will be a long time before I see her again.
DeleteI have no idea how pear sauce would be. I don't eat apple sauce so I will probably not bother making it.
Pip has great taste as the pink drink at Starbucks is delicious! Even so I only get one about once a year. They have dupes you can make at home if you think she’d be interested.
ReplyDeleteShe lives close to a Starbucks about 3 blocks from her house. Evidently she and her friends in her neighborhood like to walk there a couple of times a week. As a kid that would never have been in my budget! I will look for the dupe recipe to send to her. She likes to mess around in the kitchen.
DeleteI find I wear a lot of dresses in the summer as they are just cooler with my special underwear! I understand cute clothes are never an option when one is hot and sweaty.
ReplyDeleteI have two dresses I call my summer uniform. They are cool and thick enough that I don't have to worry with a slip.
DeleteI have a colleague friend who is going on a cruise to Greenland/ Iceland on Friday. He said the high was 48 there yesterday and I said no thank you!!! I spent most of last week at a work conference in Gulf Shores. Beautiful views, interesting topics, and while I was able to walk at the beach in the late evening, I never did swim. Your swim sounds fantastic!!!Had a fabulous blackened fish sandwich at one of the restaurants (Dragonfly) at the Gulf State Lodge in Gulf State Park. I have no idea what type of fish though…. lol. I am guessing grouper…. I was so tired when I got back I could barely move. You probably were tired also from the last two weeks of fun with Pip. Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteI would bet your sandwich was either grouper or amberjack. I love both of them, but will not eat amberjack unless I cook it myself.
DeleteThere are times I go to the beach and never get in the water. It depends on the seaweed/jellyfish situation.
Not a fan of sweet potato, so no ... I can't wrap my head around tasting it in pie. That ground chuck/bacon mix, however, sounds wonderfully intriguing!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I don't like sweet potatoes, either. Even when they're in a pie.
DeleteWe were in AK last week and the temps did get in the 40s at night but were usually in the 50s and 60s during the day, with one day topping out in the 70s. I thought it was cold, but I'm missing the cooler weather now that I'm back in the humid 90s especially since we came back to a broken AC.
DeleteThe ground chuck bacon mix was fantastic. We will get it again, but it will not be a regular thing for us. It was almost twice the price of regular ground chuck.
DeleteI will eat a baked sweet potato occasionally in the winter, but in a pie? Nope, but I won't eat a pumpkin pie either.
DeleteSounds like a good week of interesting and varied meals, to me. How is your sister? I hope she is well.
ReplyDeleteShe is having good days and bad days, but that is to be expected. Thank you for asking.
DeleteIt's 12C over here and I ask myself where is the bloody summer they promised?
ReplyDeleteYour summer might be over here with us. It's pretty dang hot here.
DeleteWe had our last sewing club on Monday and I intended to bake a cake but got called out unexpectedly. We have a lovely bakery near here so I bought a couple of delicious cakes instead. Probably better than I could make anyway, but you're right, sometimes it's just good to let someone else do the work, isn't it!
ReplyDeleteI love to cook, but I am not opposed to paying someone else to do the cooking for me!
DeleteWe love sweet potato pie. Almost tastes like pumpkin. At least the recipe I use anyway. I do love to swim, but our city pool re-built with a slow walking flow thing and it's just weird now. I have to travel to find a pool anymore. I need more recipes with a higher protein content (no protein powders) because of the garden work here lately.
ReplyDeleteI don't eat pumpkin pie either. I am sure it is the consistency rather than the taste.
DeleteI am very lucky. I just have to walk out the back door and down a few steps to get to the pool. Though on rare occasion I will float, when I am in the water I swim laps.
Sounds like a great week. I wear a lot of loose fitting, light colors when it's hot. I'm not a fan of the heat and humidity like I used to be. TBG love sweet potato pie so I make it for him. I don't care for it at all.
ReplyDeleteTheHub likes it so he gets it at a restaurant. I am a nice wife like that!
DeleteThank you. I cannot drink Starbucks coffee as I think it tastes burnt too. As a result i have no idea what the pink drink is.
ReplyDeleteHaving a pool in the summer would be lovely. We do have a pool pass for the local public pool and will be using it a lot I'm sure.
Other than seeing the pink drink I have no idea what it is either. I bought and drank my semi annual Starbucks coffee with Pip and now I am set until Christmas.
DeleteHaving a pool is great unless the water is out of whack and the excessive rains have kept it a challenge to keep up with.
I made pear jam last year. I used an apple jam recipe and just substituted pears for the apples. My husband and grandson loved it.
ReplyDeleteI knew I would make pear preserves but had not thought of making jam. I found a recipe for pear/ginger jam that I think I will try. Thanks for the heads up!
DeleteHope all is well

You too Regine!
DeleteI had no idea that you could get a grilled cheese at Starbucks! I wish I had a pool in my backyard. We live two blocks from the neighborhood pool . . .I just don't make it down there often.
ReplyDeleteI had non idea Starbucks had grilled cheese either and it is not where I would go to get one, ever!
DeleteI would probably not go to a neighborhood pool but I can go to my backyard any time and wear my seriously ugly and unflattering suit. In spite of how it looks and how I look in it, it is the perfect suit for swimming laps. The only other humans that see me in it are my sister and TheHub. They often swim laps with me.
