And Life Goes On

I woke this morning and of course the memories of 9/11 returned as fresh as the day they were made. It was such a sad day in our history, but fortunately for me I had a list of chores, and obligations that kept me hopping until about 3 pm.  It left me little time to dwell on the sad memories.

And now I have a delightful memory for the latter part of the day. I am very fortunate to have lovely neighbors who live 2 houses from me. They have not one, but 2 sets of adorable twin girls who I see randomly, mostly when they are outside playing. Earlier in the summer I had invited them down to swim, and had mentioned to their Mama  that they were welcome to swim regularly as long as a parent was with them.

In the course of talking with her yesterday, she asked if they could come this afternoon after school. There is nothing more delightful than the sounds of children playing and having a good time on an afternoon when I might have stayed indoors and stayed glued to the TV as stations aired replays of the attacks.

Thankful for the wonderful afternoon and the music that comes to us in the form of splashes and giggles.

p.s. How cool is it that the older girls also gave me a  a book recommendation? They know I love to read and wanted me to read a book they had both just read. Starting it tonight so I can talk with them about it the next time I see them. I have great neighbors!

  1. That sounds a wonderful antidote to the sadness of the anniversary and the busyness/insanity in your life. What was the book?

    1. The book is The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. I am pretty sure it is not something I would have chosen for myself, but if 2 fifth grade girls make it a point to tell me they think I will like it and want to talk with me about it later there is no way I will not read it.

  2. Your day was well-spent. Some neighbors had several children, always, laughing, squealing and fighting. At least younger children take in indoors around dinner time. What book did the girls recommend?

  3. I am glad you had things to do and neighbors to distract you, today. I'm afraid I watched too many documentaries of the day, today.

    1. I would have liked to have had about 3 less things to do , but was so happy for the neighbor's diversions.

  4. Great neighbors are like gold! There are two adorable little girls down the street. They came to visit and give me hugs when I was feeling blue about missing my daughter. They also came to visit Zoey when she was sick. So thoughtful and sweet!

    1. Oh, that is so sweet of your neighbors! I am just glad that the girls don't see me as too old to have interactions with, and are willing to include me in their shared interests!

  5. There is nothing better than the sound of children playing happily. I'm glad that part of your memory is not overshadowed by the horrendous events of the day.

  6. While I have strange goings to observe next door-I do love hearing their kids playing. Living by a park, I hear the kids on the playground as well. Thoughtful of the girls to think of you.

    1. I have an "unusual" neighbor next door also. Fortunately she lives alone with her cat who talks to her and tells her things.

  8. I love having great neighbors (and you sound like one, too!). DH called our old neighbor (of 20 years) the other night. DH greeted him, when he answered, like he has done for 20+ years whenever he'd call.."Hi neighbor". LOL. We have great neighbors here now, too.

    1. It is so nice for me to enjoy them but have no responsibility for them other than make sure they are safe in the water.

  12. It is good to remember and yet not dwell. I avoided most social media and news yesterday for that reason. Good neighbors are so hard to find, I am sure they love having you for a neighbor too

    1. All the kids in the neighborhood like me because I give full size Hershey bars on Halloween. Candy bribery works every time!

  14. How nice that you can enjoy the girls and let them use your pool. They probably think that you are the cat's meow.

    1. I do too, Belinda. I have never understood the appeal of an adults only community. I get such pleasure listening to the kids in the neighborhood play.
