Variation on a Theme of Dutch Baby

A few days ago Rhonda from If you do stuff, stuff gets done shared her tried and true recipe for a Dutch Baby pancake.  I tried a small version the next day but ate it plain.  Other than eating a piece of birthday cake for breakfast the day after my birthday, I really don't like sweet things in the morning. It was delicious perfectly plain so I thought I would make it for TheHub and me over the weekend.

Rhonda's Dutch Baby Recipe

Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2 eggs
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup flour pinch of salt

Beat the eggs, add the milk and melted butter and stir well, Add the flour and a pinch of salt and stir to combine. Pour into a well buttered pie pan and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

Rhonda suggests serving this with a sprinkle of confectioners sugar and syrup.  I know it is delicious that way and we will try it one late breakfast morning

Pure unadulterated Dutch Baby straight from the oven!

Saturday was one of those glorious unhurried mornings with a beautiful sky and cooler air, so we sat on the deck and had several cups of coffee before we worked up any appetite at all. I went into the house and popped the Dutch Baby in the oven then spent the next 20 minutes on the deck with more coffee and conversation. How great is it to have a breakfast that basically makes itself.  A couple of minutes before it was done I grated about 1/4 cup of cheese and popped three pieces of precooked frozen bacon in the microwave.  When the Dutch Baby was all done and nice and puffy, I sprinkled the cheese over it followed by crumbled bacon.

Oh my goodness! It was so good, better than good in fact! This is going to be a standard at the lake place for breakfast.  It was that delicious and so easy.! Now I am just happy we are going to the lake this weekend so we can have more of this goodness without waiting too long!  College football and a Dutch Baby, life is good!

Sorry all these songs pop  through my brain as I post the title of whatever is my "new happening"! I keep telling myself I am ok, because I don't hear voices in my head, just music.

  1. Love love the music- it's also featured in one of my favorite movies Somewhere In Time. As for the Dutch baby- I've seen the recipe but have never made it but I LOVE some tasty cheesecake!

    1. Music seems to run through my head at all times, so now I am going to subject anyone who reads this to it (well if they choose to click, that is)

  2. It does look good. And would probably go well with lemon and a sprinkle of sugar too (which is as sweet as I can cope with in the morning).

    1. I am sure it would! I love sweet things, but not right out of the chute!

    2. Me too. And sadly I suspect that if I could get my sweet fix early my weight would be easier to manage. I am sure I have heard that things eaten earlier are digested better.

  3. I absolutely do not like sweets for breakfast. Pancakes or waffles with syrup just put me in a coma, and I am just done for the day, ready for a nap. Plus, if I eat sweets first thing, it seems I want and sometimes eat sweet stuff all day long. Oatmeal does not count as sweet, even though I like it with sugar and raisins.

Somewhere in Time...I knew that it was music from something I loved.

  4. I don't think I have seen the movie. An arrangement of this was a recital piece of mine years and years ago.

  5. I want to try that recipe. How many people does it serve? And yes, that music was played throughout the movie of Somewhere in Time, a classic love story with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. You should watch it sometime...with lots of popcorn and tissues.

    1. It serves 2, but if you run over to Rhonda's blog she tells you how to increase it to serve more. I will try and catch the movie sometime.

  6. I can eat sweets in the morning, but then I suffer with a big sugar crash. However, it I have some protein in my stomach, all is fine. I never heard of a Dutch Baby, but this looks good.

    1. It is good and so easy. If I eat sweet stuff in the morning I want sugar all day. Though I can have a little jelly on a biscuit like you, as long as I eat protein first.

  7. I made a Dutch Baby this morning -- vanilla pear, so maybe not quite your thing (it was sweet, for sure) but holy cow I think it was the best DB I've made. I'm really intrigued by the idea of making it savory, too. They're a nice change from regular pancakes, which always feel so heavy to me.

  8. I think the lightness is what I liked best. Since we don't do sweet breakfasts often, I never think of pancakes. But this has opened my mind to all kinds of opportunities for pancakey things.

  9. Anne, your bacon and cheese Dutch baby looks delicious. I've enjoyed all the comments and hope others are trying it, it is a shame so few people know about this thrifty and delicious dish.
