I am in a quandary about what to do with the ever increasing robo calls. Long ago I signed up with the "do not call" system and they abated for a while. And then along came the robot caller.
Rachel with credit card services started calling. While I appreciate her automated honesty that there is nothing wrong with my credit card (no shit!) I am tired of her calls every single day. And the hussy is not only brazen enough to call daily, but the witch changes numbers so that even though I block them religiously she pops up with a new one. And now she has gotten clever enough to use numbers from the same area code with local prefixes.
Next let's throw in the guy from "Microsoft" who calls at least once a week to tell me something is wrong with my computer. Amazing, especially since I have a Macbook. He uses local ever changing numbers also.
And we should not forget the guy from the "IRS" who only wants to help me with the lien and outstanding charges the IRS has filed against me. He honestly only wants to help and I understand if I want his help I will be routed to either CVS or Rite-Aid to send E-cards with 5 grand to assure all actions will stop. Did I ever mention TheHub is a CPA?
Last but not least is the the robo nameless woman who calls me to help with legal issues. It seems that 3 criminal warrants have been filed against me, but she only wants to help in this police matter and if I will go to Rite Aid or CVS and send money to her, all the charges will magically be dropped before I am served. Though I do not have a criminal lawyer, we do have an attorney and I am pretty sure I would call him first and let him refer me to one of his contemporaries who deals in criminal law if I had done something illegal. (Though I will admit sometimes I do drive over the speed limit and I have been known to cut the tags off of pillows and mattresses. Shhhh don't tell anyone!)
And before you think I am an idiot for answering these calls, I don't. Unless I know the number on caller ID I do not answer it, but these suckers leave me messages and I have to cull through them to delete. So if you call me and I don't answer your call, leave a message in your best non-robo voice and I will get back to you. I hate it that voice mail is my only form of defense against the persistent intruders.

I have my own "Rachel." she has all the same tricks up her sleeve. There is also the person who wants to help me "Fix" my credit card interest or something. Finally, I played along. The person then wanted to know the card vendor. I told her if she were with my cc company, she would know my card number. She tried to waffle and coax it out of me. I told her she was a scammer and that I was noting the time of day and number and turn her in to police. Well, that worked for a year after three years of harassment. I notice she is up to her old shenanigars. sigh
ReplyDeleteIrritating isn't it?
Deleteugh!
DeleteAll of these callers ring us too. And the people who are going to get us compensation for the accidents we haven't had. We too are on the Do Not Call register and it is worse than useless.
ReplyDeleteI do answer and ask them to put their concerns in writing, before hanging up. They never have.
I let my happy voice on voice mail answer them and cull them that way. I love that they are willing to compensate you for your nonexistent accident. Maybe you wrecked driving the get-a-way car during my nonexistent crime spree?
DeleteI am the only person at our house who answers the landline because hubby and kids all rely on their cell phones. I answer the landline just because it might be my parents or a rare old person from church so nearly every call I answer is a nuisance, people asking for money or doing surveys or selling things. It drives me nuts and sometimes i just ignore the hone but you know every time i do, it's someone i actually know!
ReplyDeletethere doesn't seem to be a solution
Drives me crazy and I do miss some real calls, but everyone who calls me knows to leave a message because I do cull calls.
ReplyDeleteI usually don't answer either, but those local-looking numbers still get me sometimes. My sister has signed up for something that hangs up on robocalls. The phone rings only once and she knows it was a robocall. I've been meaning to find out what that is, but haven't yet.
ReplyDeleteSo for now, I feel your pain.
When you find out what it is I hope you will share!
DeleteI'm so glad CVS and Rite-Out are available on every small town in America so people can take advantage of these great offers of help. It really is a sad situation when you have to duck and weave your won phone.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I am tired of having to dodge invaders in my own home!
DeleteOh, I hate that Rachel chick, too!
ReplyDeleteYep no one likes her.
DeleteWe get those same ones here in Canada, scammer calls but not as frequent it sounds like. By the way, I have made your Peruvian chicken recipe twice now and it is a favorite of ours. Love the combo of spices
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty much a daily occurrence here now. Glad you like the chicken and equally glad you mentioned it. I needed some inspiration!
DeleteI actually wrote a post about this at Easter. On the Monday before Easter I got a call at 11 pm!!!! I was furious (but luckily I wasn't already in bed) and then on Good Friday I got a call at 4.40 am! I called them back and got the name of the company and left a comment on their Facebook page. They apologized almost immediately and said "they would look into it", but I have received calls from them since, although not at 4.40 a.m. Sometime ago I heard a great recording of a(supposedly) doddery old Australian gent who went along with these scammers. It was actually a recording and his answers were so vague that it kept the telemarketer on the line for about 20 minutes. The guy let out a string of expletives when he realized it was a recording. Brilliant! Anna
ReplyDeleteThat's funny. I did keep one of these people on the line once. They called to tell me my car warranty had expired and I let them go through their entire spiel until they asked what make, model and year my car was. I told they they could tell me since they "knew" about my warranty. They hung up on me.
DeleteI have gotten calls about my car warranty for the last three days!
DeleteThanks for the laugh! It's ridiculous, isn't it? And I guess you haven't heard from "Veronica" yet at Card Member Services? I think she is Rachel's coworker...or sister! hahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI have not had the pleasure of connecting with Veronica." Can't wait," she said somewhat sarcastically
DeleteThese lovely folks leave messages for me, too. Worse, though, was when I got my phone and soon learned that the person who had the number before me received frequent calls from collection agencies and a certain prisoner who wanted her to accept his collect calls. I called my mobile service provider and asked about changing the number. The customer service rep said I could do that or I could get as much information about the callers as possible and tell them that I was going to charge them with harassment. I decided to go with threatening them. It was fun. It's still fun. It gets a lot of hostility out of my system.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie, who hates Rachel, too, but some days, no one else calls so I string her along
Good for you for stringing the wench along!
ReplyDeleteThe last digit of my landline is the digit next to the last digit of a local retirement home (The last digit is the only difference in the number) A couple of times a week I get calls from some of their residents needing everything from their toilet unclogged to having the kitchen rustle up a quick snack for them. I am always very polite and tell them they misdialed except for a couple of times when Ms. H needed her oxygen changed and Mr, W fell and needed immediate help. I have them hang on the line with me while I call the facility to get help and stay on the line with them until help comes.
That is so nice of you, Anne!
DeleteI seem to get calls from home remodeling centers and vacation get away places. Maybe they are trying to tell me something? I should let the answering machine pick it up, but some family and friends won't leave messages. They hang up and call back, over and over again!
ReplyDeleteThat is why I like caller ID. At least I know if it is a personal call or not.
DeleteI get those calls from spoofed numbers that appear to be local numbers to me on my cell phone but I never answer any calls unless I know who's calling me... and for that they have to be listed as one of my own contacts. No one has ever left me a message. I have noticed, however, that those calls have been more and more frequent over the past week or so. My "home phone" is another cell phone (a dumb one) and is turned off. I only keep the line to give that number out as "my" number to people/companies I don't want to talk to. I'm sure they call that line too but when I turn the phone back on, I usually don't even have a list of missed calls. Good because I don't care :)
ReplyDeleteFYI, if you get spam TEXTS (and I do, once in a while), forward the text to 7726. It works with ALL phone companies. Your own phone company will text you back, asking you for the number who sent you the spam (and I guess will block it for you). I got another one this past week re: a supposed suspended account with Wells Fargo.
Thanks for the text spam info. I really don't have trouble with my cell. We will keep the landline for Mom as long as she still remembers the number.
DeleteIf you ever get ahold of them to tell them to quit calling, please tell them to leave me alone too!
ReplyDeleteHave you heard from the free cruise and the "I got a phone call just like this one" guy? LOL
Not familiar with that one. I guess my number has not been sold to that call list __yet
DeleteLucky you!
DeleteThank for your very good article.! i always enjoy & read the post you are sharing!
