Be Careful

You know how sometimes you think if something happens it will bring you joy? Yesterday as I posted my joy list I added something to the effect that having an organized laundry room would bring me great joy. Well somebody kick me quick! About an hour after I posted the list TheHub came in from his recreational shopping trip and headed to the laundry room to put something in the extra refrigerator. I heard him yelling but could not hear what he was saying, and normally I would have ignored him, but I walked into the laundry room to find water everywhere.

My laundry room is a pretty big room with the washer and dryer, along with an upright freezer, and auxiliary fridge. In addition it functions as a studio with drafting space, it has an area for sewing and a crafting space plus pantry overage space. Like I said it is a pretty big room and it's obviously pretty level because water was EVERYWHERE.

The anticipation of a nicely organized room (organized in my own time) was short lived as I grabbed a ton of towels to absorb all the water. Then the room had to be emptied to get all the water that ran under things, which meant bookshelves and work stations had to be emptied, moved and turned upside down so the bottoms would dry. Additionally (You know how I said organized?) gift boxes from Christmas were still stacked in one corner, gift bags were in a cardboard holder on the floor next to the boxes, so I have a lot of wet cardboard and a lot of wet gift bags (The bags may be salvageable or maybe not)

So now on the day when I had not planned on doing much at all, I was knee deep in crap. Wet crap!  I am looking for the joy but I don't know where it is right now. The repairman has been called and hopefully the machine can be repaired.

Looks like the laundry room is going to be organized much sooner than I had planned.

  1. How awful! When water is everywhere, I kick myself for not putting away things that got soggy and did not make it. Will you wash the towels at your mother's? Even though you will have the organized room, it is hard to find joy there. groan.... At least your husband was there to help and you found it soon, not when it had soaked the house all night.

    1. I am waiting until my beloved fix it man comes tomorrow. If the washer can be repaired I will wash the towels here. If it can't be fixed I will buy another on tomorrow and go to Mom's to wash them. And I am kicking myself for not doing this in January when I had planned to do it but binge read instead.

    2. You did not get things out of water today? I could not have stood to see things get soggier by the hour.

    3. The laundry room is completely emptied s nothing is in water. The towels are wet but contained in hampers. The boxes have been tossed, all pantry items are dried and on the dining room table. This was all done yesterday, immediately when we noticed the water. The gift bags are on a mat drying and may be salvageable or not a couple of other things that got wet may be ruined, but they are drying and I will make a decision on them later. The room is a very large, multi use room and houses many things. I am waiting for the repair man to come before I put everything back in the room.

  2. Oh, no! I'm sorry this happened but, the joy might be in having an organized laundry room sooner than anticipated? A similar thing happened to me, several years ago, when I dreamed that the shower was running and woke up to find that one of the water hoses connected to the washing machine had sprung a leak! My laundry area is a small closet, but the adjoining family room and my bathroom, too, were flooded!

I hope your washer gets repaired soon and everything will be nicely organized by the end of the month. :)

  3. One time, I went to church on Sunday night and left a load of diapers in the washing machine. The church was about three blocks away and I had to run home. As i stepped into the half light house in the summer, I felt something funny. It was an inch of water. It was in laundry room, dining room/kitchen and had made its way to the new carpet. I had turned on a light switch before I knew it was water and felt lucky not to have been electrocuted. I called the church where my older two were watching the baby in the nursery until I came back from the short trip home. I had them spend church time in the nursery taking care of 9 month old while adults were present. I still did not have it cleaned up when I went back to get them. It was a horror.

It is after 2 pm and I just posted my comment even though I started it about 1 pm. What time have you got your settings on? Or, is it me, or is it blogger?

  4. Yes, the universe does listen. I guess that's where the expression, "Be careful what you wish for," comes from. We have had pipes come apart under the kitchen sink twice. Luckily I keep two plastic washtubs in the cabinet underneath that hold cleaning supplies and they caught the bulk of the leak both times. I think draining the hot water out of pasta does something to loosen the PVC connections or something. Each time it happened, things got cleaned and organized. I don't keep much stored under there anymore....just in case it happens again.

    1. Lorraine,
That is how I found out no glue had been used by the plumber who put in the kitchen plumbing in this house!

    2. Yep it does listen. It is my mistake for not organizing it earlier, but since December it has become a catch-all. Totally my fault!

  5. Ack. :-( Hope it is a quick & relatively painless fix.

  6. The washer will either be fixed tomorrow (already talked to Danny, my go-to guy) or a new one will be bought. The clean up is what I am dreading. I have had company off and on almost continually since December and everything that needed a temporary place to live was shoved in there, which is why I wanted to organize it in the first place. But I would have done it "station by station" Now it is going to be an all at once job, but I am waiting until Monday to see what the status of the washer is.

  7. Oh no! that is not the way to get your room put to rights, though that is somewhat how my family room eventually got redone. I hope your smart pruchases are at least partially salvageable.

    1. Things will either be ok or will become trash or recycling. I am not going to get crazy about any loss, since I have way too much stuff anyway. I am just dreading getting everything in order. It was such a mess before it was a wet mess.

  8. Yeeeeeesh. That sounds horrible! I'm sorry. If nothing else, I'll point out that your joy was looking forward to being able to just change things up and NOT having to repair something. Far from one in the same and I'm sad you have to deal with the latter.

    1. I am not sorry I will get the room organized, and sooner is always better than later. I'm just a little teed that i have to shift things I had planned for tomorrow (fun things) to clean and organize. 1st World problems!

  9. Oh boy! One of those situations where the mess will get a lot worse before it gets better! On the up side, all the stuff that has been destroyed won't need to be put away. I hate putting things away.....

  10. What a mess! When we lived in our other house, we had to turn on a pump every time we ran the washer. Never having had to do that before, I forgot more than once and everywhere was flooded. Somethings were saved and some were not. Eventually, we got the pump replaced and the washer flooding stopped. However, we still had to learn that if we didn't keep our gutters very clean, we could have a flood in the basement during a hard rain. Eventually, we got rid of all rugs and everything was lifted off the floor an inch or two so hopefully it would stay dry when there was water in the basement for whatever reason.

It's definitely not fun, but you will probably do a more thorough job of organizing than you might have otherwise done since you had to take everything out. Good luck.

    1. Better organized is the upside. I know some things were ruined, but hopefully it will be few. I just hope I don't have to replace the washer, since the dishwasher is on its last leg right now.

  11. My heart goes out to you! At least you had the time to deal with the problem. I hope nothing was damaged. God bless you all!

  12. It is a first world problem and I know it is. There was no damage to the room and every single thing in it can be replaced if it needs to be.

  13. Oh my gosh! I feel for you and know that was not a fun day! Now it will be organized for sure! :-)
