Tuesday 4

Annie at Tuesday 4 has posted some questions about September for this week's questions. Whenever I remember it is Tuesday I try and answer them, but like everything in my life it is hit or miss. This week I remembered!

                                                                   I love his voice

1. When you were in school or university, did you look forward to returning?
Yes and no
Why or why not?
Alabama is still very hot when school starts, so the first few weeks of school were blazing. Until I was in high school none of the classrooms were air-conditioned and it was pretty miserable. In college you still had to get to class when it was sweltering and those 2 pm classes walking or biking across campus were not fun.
I did like getting back to seeing my friends, I loved all the new notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons. Each year I would promise myself that I would just do homework or take notes in my notebooks. It would last until the first class when I would find myself doodling in them. I think each year in every class I had a pencil drawing of every teacher I ever had, not to mention doodles of every shape and kind.

2. September has  Labor Day, which, for many is the signal of summer's end and fall's grand entrance.  Do you celebrate Labor Day in any way or is it just a day off for you?
When I was a kid we cooked out at my grandparents house and many of my cousins, aunts and uncles were there. By the time I was a teen that had stopped and Labor Day was just a school holiday when my sister and I could sleep late.
Now we may have bbq or maybe That is the extent of celebrating.

3. September's birthstone is the Sapphire which is 2nd only to a diamond in hardness. (Ruby is a red sapphire by the way) It comes in many colors.  Do you know your birthstone and do you like it?
September is my birth month and I have a gorgeous sapphire and diamond cluster ring, that I never wear. My parents gave it to me when I was 17 and I wore it for a few years, but since then it has been in my jewelry box. When I was deep cleaning my room I saw it and decided to take it to the jewelers to have it resized (Thanks arthritic knuckles)

4. September's birth flower is the Astor. What is yours ?
Since I am a September baby I guess mine is an aster, but I never knew that before.  I have never planted them in any of my yards which is a shame because they are happy flowers.

Come on and join in!

  1. I enjoyed reading your answers. I don't blame you for not liking the return to school during the sweltering heat.

    1. I see the kids in the neighborhood going to school and think how lucky they are to have a/c in their classrooms now.

  2. Every year, from first through many years of college, I loved returning to school. It was hot and home and hot at school. In university the cigarette smokers made life miserable, but at least the windows were open. Going back to school in the South is miserable because of the heat.
I have no recollection of anything special on Labor Day, but I suppose we did celebrate.
My birthday is in September, so I knew my birthstone. I had a sapphire and diamond ring that I loved, but I gave it to my daughter who was also born in September when she graduated from college as I had nothing else and no money to buy her a suitable gift. I knew aster was the flower for September birthdays. I have never had asters, but maybe this fall I will plant them.

    1. It is always hot in August when school starts back, and in May when school is ending.

  3. Your ring sounds beautiful. I don't wear rings much anymore. I couldn't when I was working as a nurse and now I'm just out of the habit.

    1. The ring is beautiful and when I got it I wore it on my left hand. After I was married I wore those on the left and found wearing a ring on my right had was bothersome, so I just quit wearing it. I need to try again because it serves no purpose sitting in the jewelry box

  4. Loved your answers. My birthstone is the garnet but I will have to check to see what my birth month's flower is.

  6. Asters are happy little flowers. I don't have any in my garden either and I should plant some because I like them so much. Thanks for joining in.

    1. I had to research how/when to plant asters and it seems I can plant them right now for next fall.

  7. I probably looked forward to returning to class when I went to university (I was in my late 20's, early 30's then) more than grade/high school. Though I did miss my friends and was happy to see them...and I loved the new notebooks too. It just meant no more sleeping in.
We did not celebrate Labour Day, but I do recall the first week in September always meant fresh potatoes and corn from the garden. That was something to celebrate. :)
My birthday is in March; so that makes my birthstone aquamarine or bloodstone and my flower is daffodil. I did not know either of these things and had to look them up. The daffodil makes sense as a spring flower. Funny, I used to buy them every spring as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.

    1. Fresh potatoes and corn is worth celebrating. I did not know about the birth month flowers either. Daffodils are in full bloom here by early March so it is a perfect flower of the month.

  9. Loved school always. I like Labor Day because can sleep except I went to work for a bit yesterday… sigh. I know my birthstone and no, I don’t know my flower but I like sunflowers. You can eat the seeds and I used to plant them with my grandma! Cindy in the South

    1. One year a friend I walked home from school with had a pack of sunflower seeds to eat on the way. We stuck individual seeds in yards on the way home. Amazingly a few came up and produced flowers

    1. Labor Day seems to have lost some of its excitement. Of course school starts in early August here so it no longer heralds the beginning of a new academic year.

  11. One of my favorite singers and songs. :)
Growing up, the school year started in January and ended in December; it was hot year round and we didn't have air conditioning. It was only after I came to this country that I realized that the school year starts in what feels like the middle of the year to me!
Don't really do anything special to celebrate Labor Day.
My birthstone is topaz and the flower is chrysanthemum. :)

  12. 1. I loved returning to school, but more so, college. I loved dorm life, loved my classes, and enjoyed my friends.
    2. One thing I DISLIKED about my college years is that my college did not observe Labor Day, and I couldn't shake the feeling that they were anti-labor. I am pro-labor, and pro-union. (Yes, even those raised in academia, and grew up to work in, well, non-labor type fields, can be pro-labor.)
    3. My birthstone is the diamond, but I prefer rubies.
    4. My birth month flowers are the Daisy and the Sweet Pea. (I only know that because I looked it up for this.) I like them, and have both in my flower beds, but my favorite flower EVER is the Heavenly Blue Morning Glory.

    1. One year I planted blue morning glory and moon flower intertwined on the same fence and it might have been the prettiest flower display I have ever had.

  13. It is 4 pm as I write this. It is 101. Kids PE classes were canceled again since the high was going to be 106. September is always a hot month for us in So CA. We are having a heat wave. The plants are not too happy around here. I need to get some rings resized too. I also have some arthritis in my fingers. Take care.

  14. My husband and I often wonder how Alabamians lived without air conditioning. I cannot imagine being in school, trying to concentrate in heat like this. It must have been very difficult. I'm a Sept baby too and I was named after a Nat King Cole song. :-)

    1. Obviously "Sweet Lorraine". School was hot and I do remember some days when it seemed unbearable.

  15. Happy Birthday month!!
I enjoyed elementary school, but I didn't look forward to high school and college starting.
We usually grill and used to camp for Labor Day weekend, but this year was rainy so no cook out.
My birthstone is a ruby, and I think it is a beautiful stone, but I don't wear much jewelry.
I didn't know there was a birth flower, but apparently it is larkspur and water lily of which I grow neither.

    1. I honestly had no idea there was such a thing as a birth month flower. I guess old dogs can learn a new trick or two occasionally.

  16. I liked school generally, but never wanted to go back. I much preferred the unstructured summer. My birthstone is ruby, but I don't have any.

    1. I have always liked summer too, and my childhood summer was nearly blissful. Hot but blissful!
