Other than finding a couple of recipes I would like to try, I did next to nothing to get ready for Christmas 2025 this past week.
Not what I want for Christmas meals, but it makes me laugh
I did get started in the upstairs room whose closet is supposed to house all seasonal decorations. I have been good about taking things up there, but not good at all about putting them away. I had already decided I would go through each and every container in the closet, and also those strewn about the room putting my hands on each item and making a decision to keep said thing or let it go*.
So far the only things I finished are (1.) the container with the carolers (which are all repaired and waiting for their appearance on the foyer table next season), (2.) the wrapping containers (one each with gift wrap, gift boxes, and Christmas gift bags) and (3.) 3 boxes of living room tree decor (now condensed into one large container).
Judging by my progress (or lack thereof) I figure it will take me several days workings pretty steadily to go through everything and get it packed up and stowed**.
Now you have to remember that normally I decorate for each holiday and have a pretty large selection for every one, so this is not all Christmas related. But there is no point in doing a half-assed job is there? I will be working my way through every single holiday's containers before I am completely through.
If I were a brave puppy I would have taken a picture of the room and closet before I began just to show you how bad it was. I will admit there was a box of skulls and a horn of plenty hanging out in the room beside all of the Christmas stuff. Instead I will take on when I get the project completed.
*So far, I have one copy paper box filled with things to give away. It was pretty easy to look at something and see if I was hanging on to it because I use it regularly, for sentimental reasons, or just because I used it years ago and never got rid of it.
Now I just have to figure who is still accepting Christmas decor so I can give it away.
I also separated personalized brass ornaments my mom gave each of my sons every year until they were adults. Those are all going to them the next time I see them.
** Don't even begin to think I am going to do this consecutive days until it is done. I have living to do, the door to the room can be shut, and I still have at least 38 weeks until I am ready to get it back out and start the Christmas decorating process again.
Shutting doors is my favorite cleaning technique.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it works too well for me. I am a procrastinator by nature and closed doors can be way to convenient for me.
Delete😂😂😂😂 Mine, too, SAM!
DeleteYesterday my husband said that he wants some Marzipanstollen...what? now stollen? So I had to bake him a stollen yesterday...I actually need to throw some holiday deco. away...might go to the cellar and do some work today :-) But just like you said...the door can be shut and it's still time before X'mas.
ReplyDeleteThere is time, but my nature is to put things off until there is no more time
DeleteI agree with your method even if it will take longer. Thank goodness for doors that shut.
ReplyDeleteI just need to finish, but I decided I would work one section of the closet at a time.
DeleteI too have Christmas decor to donate. I'm am also hoping I find a place that will take it. I don't want to hold onto it until December ha ha!
ReplyDeleteI don't want to keep mine until December either. I am going to try my local Buy Nothing facebook group first.
DeleteIt is a slow process isn't it? I went through all of our Christmas items this year when I was packing them away and it felt so good to have only things I love and use and having them all organized.
ReplyDeleteI fully intended to go through all of ours before Christmas, sort and donate to anyone who wanted things, but we were both so sick that Christmas just sort of passed us by. I am finding things I didn't even remember having here.,
DeleteI try to sort through things as I put them away, but I will admit that I hang onto more than I should. But I don't decorate the way you do, so I don't have as many things and it's an easier job.
ReplyDeleteThere are things I have not used for years, and just don't need anymore, so getting rid of them is something I need to do so my sons won't have to do it someday.
DeleteAnne; as difficult as the move west was, we were able to downsize Christmas by half (I married the male version of Martha Stewart) and it is all organized and in one closet! Yeah! Took days after Christmas bur so worth it. You will get there.
ReplyDeleteI know I will get it done___eventually!
DeleteI know it is probably easy to get rid of "I used it years ago and never got rid of it" group. BUT how do you get rid of broken sentimental stuff...asking for a friend. I used to just pack up all my stuff every 5 years and that got rid of a lot, but I am not doing that anymore.
ReplyDeleteYou are asking the person who has kept a broken ornament in my china cabinet for decades because it was our first ornament on our first Christmas tree. It serves no purpose but I will not get rid of it. I also have a Santa Claus light bulb that was on my mom's childhood tree. It does not work but I put it on my den tree every year. It is another thing I will not get rid of
DeleteGood for you working on that project. I got rid of a lot of Christmas the year before when I packed it up. This year I wasn't able to decorate much, yet the things I put out looked great so I'm thinking I have a lot more to get rid of.
ReplyDeleteSentimentality's long been my Achilles heel! Oh, what I'd give for your storage space!
ReplyDeleteI have two huge bins of Christmas decor to go through. They are in the garage and the plan is to sort through them sometime in October, so I can donate the items before Christmas.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is why I love you.... Don't let Sissie know
ReplyDeleteNo worries about getting it done quickly...you do have several weeks left. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll try to remember to remind you, but I definitely want to see a photo of the carolers when they are displayed.
