It's A Caesar Thing

Every year on March 15, I call My Beloved Sister, lower my voice and very slowly say "Beware the Ides of March". Of course I did it today, and, as usual, she started laughing before I was halfway through. She hates March and has declared any bad thing that ever happened to her happened in March. She had an uneventful day today so the Ides must have left her alone.
It must be a little pissed off with me making fun of the day, because I just got back from the emergency room a bit ago.

I cook all the time, and know my way around a kitchen and how to use kitchen tools properly, and I know to curl my fingers under when chopping, so I am unsure how my index finger managed to slip out of it curled position right as I was chopping.

The upside is I did not need stitches to stop the bleeding because they could not join the skin together. Instead I got to burn the pieces it together with silver nitrate. The really cool part is I get to have a black fingertip for the next few weeks.

Damn Ides! Now I need someone to call me each year!

  1. Crap on a cracker, let's hope March doesn't involve any more trips to the Dr for you!

  2. Ouch! I hope your index finger heals soon, Anne.
I never curl my fingers under when chopping, I must learn how to do it.

    1. I would say I always do it, but obviously I don't! The finger will heal shortly. I figure it might continue throbbing for a couple of days but then will be fine. It will be black from the silver nitrate for a couple or three weeks so it should be a decent conversation piece

  3. Well that would be a shock to the system!

    1. It was more of an insult than a shock to me. I keep them very sharp and have really good knife skills___except for yesterday!

  4. That finger wanted to sneak out to do something weird. Bad finger.

    1. It was a wicked little bugger. Hopefully it learned its lesson and will stay curled from now on.

  5. Ouch! I hope your finger heals, soon. I had to apply a sort of silver salve for my radiation burns! I forget what it was called, now, but the nurse said it was used on burn victims.

I have used silver cream for burns. It works well to cool the burn. The silver nitrate on an open wound essentially cauterizes it and burns like a son of a gun for a little while.

    1. Dumb dumb mistake on my part, but I am blaming TheHub since I was making dinner early so he could watch the basketball playoffs uninterrupted. Guess that didn't work

  7. "It should be a decent conversation piece". Ha. Much like my blackened thumbnail which has finally fallen off, it is a constant reminder of "How the heck did that happen? I should know better than that." Hope it doesn't hurt for too long and that you heal quickly.

    1. Except for the silver nitrate burn this has not really been truly painful. It is just a constant throb with an occasional wowza reminder. It will feel much better by tonight I am sure, but for now it is very bearable, and on my left hand which I only use for balance anyway.

  8. Oh my, Anne. I hope it heals fast, but yes, a conversation piece to be sure. One of my sister's birthday is March 15th, but I have never directly connected the two.

    1. For over 30 years I have been calling my sister and ragging her about the Idea. When she was in the 10th grade and read Julius Caesar as an English requirement, she developed a disdain for the Ides. (Her 1st boyfriend dumped her on that day) Since then she has hated March and it truly does seem like anything unpleasant in her life happens during March. This March she found out her dog's kidneys were no longer working (after a year of intense treatment) and she had to have her put down. When she called to tell me about Gracie her first words to me were "Damn March"

  9. So we let let Sluggy do that she is good at mean crap like that. When she calls just give her the finger.

  10. Et tu Anne? lol I also got cut from a knife on the Ides at work, but it was tiny, almost like a paper cut. Nothing like what happened to you. Yikes. Hope it heals up quick.

    1. My sister said the best thing was the knife. I guess I was summoning my inner Caesar and Brutus both at the same time.
