Are you afraid of the dark? As a kid I was terrified of the dark, had night terrors and would wake screaming at the top of my lungs. Luckily for my parents it only lasted a few months.(Dad in particular because he was the parent in charge when I screamed. Mom could sleep through a freight train rumbling through the house.)
Is night or day your favorite time? I am conflicted about answering this. I love the daylight, but creatively I come alive late at night. For instance I felt like painting today, prepped a canvas and did not start painting until about 11. It is currently 1:42 a.m. and I am sitting at the table with a halfway finished painting. I will put it aside until tomorrow night and finish it then.
Do you have night lights in your home? We have a nightlight in our upstairs hall but we only turn it on if we have guests. We do leave one light in the den on all night. There is no real reason we do it now, but it started when the kids were young. We have always lived in a two story house with our bedroom on the main level. We left the light on in case they came downstairs in the middle of the night. I guess now it is just a habit. I might turn it off as I go to bed tonight. I also leave a light over the kitchen sink on 24/7. Again I am not sure why, but it is just something we have always done no matter what house we lived in. Come to think of it, my parents did the same thing so I guess it is just echoing what I grew up doing.
How low do you set your air conditioning? I keep the a/c set on 76 and never adjust it, but TheHub will occasionally turn it down. If he does, when I go to bed at night I will bump it back up.
Do you keep any outdoor or indoor lights on all night? We typically turn our front outdoor lights off at about 10 unless we have guests. We have Edison lights on the back porch and the upper backyard patio that are on timers. They come on at dusk and go off around midnight.
Come on and play along!
Great questions. I have different responses to light or dark, day and night depending on the time of year. I crave daylight in winter, but in June I feel like days get long and feel like if I am done for the day, I'm being lazy. I turn on outside lights if people are not home, but otherwise not big on having extra lights on at night.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I enjoy late nights I don't like the shortest days of the year
DeleteAs a child I was not afraid of the dark, but since I was the oldest, there was always a kid younger than me who would be afraid, so I benefitted from their getting a light turned on. As an adult, I was so afraid in a haunted house, that I needed the light on for years.
ReplyDeleteI always have a light on, usually in the bathroom. Now, Tommy keeps the the stove hood light on.
At night, we have to leave it on 68 to get my bedroom cool enough so I can breathe. In the day it can be as high as 74, depending on the outdoor temp and things like overcast skies.
I usually kept my front porch lights on all night and the side porch light. Here, all the light fixtures outdoors are broken, so it is pitch dark even when we leave the house, dangerous and spooky.
You might need to get a motion sensor light. They have battery powered ones that would not require an electrician and it would be a big safety measure
DeleteHe swore he would take it down. I am not allowed to have one.
DeleteYou would not even have to mount it. It could just be sitting on a rail or table. I don't understand how you could not be allowed to have something that would be your own personal property, not attached to his house
DeleteHe gives in when I just get something and acts like he thought of it...lol. Really, he has quit screaming at me. He says lights outside blind him. oh, yeah
DeleteI forgot one answer. I do not like mornings at all. I prefer working later in the day whether it is cooking, cleaning, or sewing. Sunrises are not my thing. Around 8 o'clock, I can clean with ardor. Of course, children and work always interfered with my natural tendencies and I did not resist. But, truly I am happiest during the evening. Only the children made mornings a joy.
DeleteI like them both. We have a nightlight in the ensuite toilet but other than that all lights go off at night. As I type it is some hours before dawn which is probably my favourite time of day. Will we get to see your painting? And yes, that is a hint (or a request).
ReplyDeleteThe painting is a stylized picture to hang during Halloween. I probably will not post it, but if you come to my house for trick or treating you can see it.
DeleteWe have nightlights and motion detecting lights all over the inside of house because I am old, my vision is not that great at night and I'm afraid of falling. Also, I need to see if the dark spot on the floor is a cat toy or a giant bug I must avoid. My favorite time of day is the hour before sunrise. We have a string of lights hung all around our back patio that stay on all night as well as a dusk to dawn light that illuminates our parking area and motion detecting lights that alert us to anything coming near the house. We keep our A/C set on 73 and rarely change it.
ReplyDeleteTheHub would like your house temp better than ours!
DeleteWhen it's completely dark, I freeze in place. I need at least a little light, so I have a night light in almost every room of the house. I also have a dusk-to-dawn yard light and motion sensor lights on the front and back of my house and over the garage. When my body is left to its own devices, I end up sleeping during the day, which makes life difficult because I can't call anyone or make appointments. I'm better off being awake during the day, as I am now because of my job. I set the AC on 78, a comfortable temperature for Sweet Cheeks and for me. We both get chilly easily. I will change the AC to 76 or 77 if I have a guest who must be kept comfortable.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
My body would love it if everything started at noon, but that has never been an option. I envy morning people.
DeleteWe're 76* people, too ... only to keep the electric bill at bay. Have you written about your painting before? I'm in awe of those of you who do. Please, tell us more!
ReplyDeleteI prefer charcoal drawing over painting but occasionally I get an itch to paint.
DeleteI don't recall ever being afraid of the dark. Never mind, I do recall one time. I was driving from another city and missed my turn, ending up on a dark country road. I reduced my speed, not certain of the road or where it might end when all of a sudden a cow came out of the ditch to my left and nearly caused me to jump out of my skin. Living in the city it is never really dark with the street lights.
ReplyDeleteI love early morning all year around. It's quiet, no one else is stirring (and won't be for some time yet) and I can putter to my hearts content. I've even been known to wander around my yard in my nightgown when the weather is nice...because I have no concern the neighbours will see me.
There is a night light in the basement outside the laundry room and bathroom. I tend not to turn on the lights until I reach the laundry room as it emits enough light.
My a/c is set at 76F and in winter the heat is set at 70F. Funny, I use Celsius for everything else but the thermostat.
I rarely turn on the outside lights - only for company or when my son is going out at night. The backyard has only solar lights. There ought to be a light on the exterior of the sunroom but the previous owner didn't install one and I couldn't be bothered.
I think early morning is gorgeous and sometimes see it as I am going to sleep, but I rarely wake for it except during the winter.
DeleteI like day time, but, I like to stay up till the wee hours. I don't think I'm afraid of the dark, but, I do keep a night light on in my bedroom and the altar light is on all night, as are the porch lights (front and back). As for air conditioning - what's that? No central a/c and the little window unit has not been set up yet. :)
ReplyDeleteWe would be a hot damp mess with no a/c!
DeleteI enjoyed reading your answers. I tend to come 'alive' at night.
ReplyDeleteI had a friend once who decided I must be half vampire, because I love late nights but I also love being in the sun.
DeleteI enjoyed your answers. I seldom stay up late any more, but I used to. I worked 2nd shift for years and I'd get off at midnight and come home and be up until around 4:00a most nights.
ReplyDeleteI decided I am going to make myself go to bed no later than 12:30 this week just to see what happens.
DeleteI don't mind the dark, but like you, am a bit uncomfortable in total blackness. I like both day and night. I'm usually pretty creative in the morning, then again later in the day (say, any time after 8 or 9 PM). Back in the days when I freelanced, I'd work mornings, play in the afternoons, then work again after dinner. Worked pretty well. :-)
ReplyDeleteYour free lance schedule sounds like a nice wy to live.
Delete1. I am not afraid of the dark, nor was I allowed to be. A nighttime scream of "I'm scared," was met with "Of WHAT??" I was more afraid of waking my parents than of any nebulous fear of what I couldn't see. That said, I cannot bear to be in a room with the windows covered. If I go in a room with the blinds drawn during the day, I get antsy, and have to leave. I forbid this in my home, even in the kids' rooms. I especially despise it at night.
ReplyDelete2. Day or night? It depends. I like daytime for productivity, late afternoon for creativity, and evening for relaxing. I also enjoy the way the skies look at each part of the day/night.
3. We do have a night light for DH. I don't care for lights on at night.
4. While we do have it, A.C. is not something you really need here in the PNW. That said, in this heat wave (82 degrees Fahrenheit) we have run it to keep the house at 72 degrees Fahrenhet. I like a 55 degree Fahrenheit room for sleep, but settle for 62 degrees, and 72 during the day, but I will not turn the heat above 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
5. I only turn on the outside lights if someone is out at night. Of course, kids invariably forget to turn them off. We have motion sensor lights off the kitchen and master bedroom patio, which get turned on all the time by deer, cats, etc., if they are left on, so I don't turn them on.
Son 1 lives in Portland end their high for the next few days is higher than ours. Rare but it does happen.
DeleteLove the duet with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett. Thanks for sharing. I was afraid of the dark until I married Ron and he got me over most of my fears and phobias.
ReplyDeleteI love it too. Have you heard his duet with Amy Winehouse singing Body and Soul?
DeleteI fear my earlier comment must have boomeranged itself into your spam file. Lots of that stuff going around blogger lately. :(
ReplyDeleteI found it!
DeleteAs a night owl I went to sleep at 2 a.m. this morning. Wish it was otherwise, but ..... And good for you for going caving. You would NEVER get me to do that!
ReplyDeleteI was young when I went caving and thought it was so cool, except when the total darkness happened. No way I would ever do it again!
DeleteI'm not particularly afraid of the dark and sleep much better if there are no lights around. When it get's light really early, I have a mask I wear to I can sleep past 5 am.
ReplyDeleteWhen I finally get to sleep I can sleep in darkness or with every light in the house on.
DeleteEnjoyed reading your answers. Enjoy the rest of your week.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debby, you too!
