Talkin' 'bout Thanksgiving

I have mentioned before when I remember it is Tuesday I follow Annie @ Tuesday 4. This week the questions are all about Thanksgiving. As usual her questions give me reason to think and or reminisce.

1.   What is your favorite Thanksgiving show/animated show?
I don't have a favorite show or animated show, but I love the movie "Home For the Holidays" with Holly Hunter and Ann Bancroft. I watch it every year and laugh every time

2.   What is there about Thanksgiving you like the best:
I am not a big Thanksgiving fan now that I am an adult. My sons live away and it has been a very small celebration lately.
When I was a kid it was a magical time when the entire tribe gathered at Grandmother's house. I had a ton of first cousins and we kids ate first, probably so we would leave the house and go outside to play. That way the adults could enjoy their meal and visits.
Last year with Covid so intense, TheHub and I had our own private Thanksgiving.  We watched football, ate, and took naps, so it was a pretty good day! (Even better, I bought our meal prepared by Publix. I will probably do the same this year.)

3.   Favorite Thanksgiving/holiday song?:
The only Thanksgiving song I ever think about is the old hymn "We Gather Together"

I think this is a gorgeous version of the song!

4.   If you have an all holiday music radio station when do you start listening to it?:
I only listen to the radio when I am in the car and once they start playing it, I never change the station from Magic 96.5.
I will let you in on a little secret though, I listen to Christmas music off and on all year. I have 4 Spotify playlists for different types of Christmas music and probably need to add a couple of more lists to divide it a little more, and make it easier for me to find exactly the type of songs I want to listen to.
I love the song "Still, Still, Still" It is one of my favorite Christmas songs.

So if you are so inclined come on and play along!

  1. I LOVE Thanksgiving. It was a great time when we were little and all got together with family. Now it is so much work.Last year I got really sick just as dinner was being served. I remember thinking as I sat at the table, "Am I going to pass out?" My feet hurt, the bones felt crunchy, every bone in my body was on fire, i just wanted company gone so I could crawl in bed. I am kind of scared to host Thanksgiving this year as the memory is so vivid. I always loved Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving.

    1. I know I watched it with the kids when they were little but not since then. The movie I mentioned is delightfully dark and funny so it fits my tastes!

  2. That is a beautiful version of that song. Thanks for sharing it. Everybody keeps talking about that movie. I've never seen it or even heard of it, at least not that I remember. I may have to check it out this year.

    1. We are comfortable having just the two of us for a holiday. Fortunately we still like each other!

  4. I enjoyed your answers and music choices too. I don't actually listen to Christmas music throughout the year, but once in a while I may break out in singing portions of Handel's Messiah, when I come across the scripture verses in the Bible where each song came from. I cannot just read the words when I see them, I have to sing them! It gets really interesting when I try to sing all four parts...LOL. Anyway, I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving this year. Perhaps there is a neighbor or friends or someone you know in your church or community who would love to team up with you for dinner if you can't be with family? Just a thought. Seems like there are always lonely people around at the holidays with no particular place to go. Some of our best Thanksgiving memories were when we invited "almost strangers" to join us. We were never strangers again! LOL. Take care and have a blessed week.

    1. Our state still has a pretty high covid rate, and I would not make plans with just anyone at this time. Both my sister and BIL are immunocompromised and I am one of the very few people in their bubble. I have restricted my contact with most people because I do not want to be one who carries covid to them. They will have Thanksgiving with my BIL's very elderly mom, so we will just do our own very small celebration

  5. We really don't do Thanksgiving. I love the concept behind it but suspect that the commercial focus (which our stores ARE trying to foist on us) would do my head in.

    1. I think the concept and being around family is wonderful. Thanksgiving is not even terribly commercial (except for buying traditional Thanksgiving foods for the meal prep)

  6. I'll have to check out the movie. I think I thought it was a hallmark movie, and we don't really watch hallmark. ;) We usually watch Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving sometime in November though.
Thanksgiving was more fun when I was little, since there was lots of family and I didn't have to do the cooking. Now it is a smaller meal with my brother and his family. I'm not sure what will happen this year though as my nephew bought a house and mentioned having Thanksgiving there.
Thanks for the song links too.

  8. Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is a must for me. I suppose what I like best was Thanksgiving at my mother's when both parents were alive and all my siblings and children were there. Her small house was full of sound and food. I don't have a favorite Thanksgiving song but yours will do. I start listening to the radio in the car when all Christmas music comes on. Whether Tommy likes it or not, we will have Christmas music in the house this year. My karaoke machine would be a good choice, but it is buried too deep. So, we will see. I don't think it even plays cds, it is that old.

    1. I think most holidays are more magical when we remember them as they were during our childhood.

  9. We’ve wondered about the prepared dinners and have wondered if we would like them. We used to gather at Grandmas too, but those days are gone now. Not many to celebrate with nowadays.

    1. I liked everything but the dressing. It was no where near as good as I can make, but I didn't have to make it so I called it good enough!

  10. 1. I remember watching "Little Women" every Thanksgiving as my mother cooked dinner. It's not animated, but it's my favorite Thanksgiving movie.
    2. I love the smells and sights of Thanksgiving. Even here, in the PNW, there is still some foliage, the pine trees smell glorious, and then, the smells from the kitchen. I also like that it is a time for us to relax--no gift obligations, and sit around our pretty dining room table with good food and drink. After, we decorate the house for Christmas...it's "chill" as my kids say, and they like it. I refuse to allow the obligation of travel/extended family into ANY holiday, especially Thanksgiving.
    3. I don't think I have a favorite Thanksgiving song.
    4. I usually start listening to Christmas music right around Thanksgiving, and I get thrilled when I hear Advent Carols played. I DESPISE most secular Christmas music--not for religious reasons, but because it's just so HORRIBLE! (I love Jethro Tull's Christmas album, though.)

    1. I have been in the PNW at Thanksgiving before an it is beautiful and you are spot on about the smells of the pines.
I generally start decorating for Christmas on Thanksgiving night.

  11. I enjoyed reading your responses! My daughter and I like to watch the Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving special. It's become a tradition with us! Thanksgiving is not a holiday I grew up with, although I've embraced it. Last year, my daughter and I were in two different places, but, we both made a more or less traditional Thanksgiving meal (chicken instead of turkey!) and went online to "be" with each other during the meal. This year, we will be together in person, hopefully, and it will be a very thankful day, I'm sure. :)

    I enjoyed your answers.

  14. While Thanksgiving seems to be the start of the Christmas season in America, here in Canada Thanksgiving will be celebrated Oct 11. It's a time that marks the fall season and the completion of harvest. If we're lucky, we'll enjoy cool mornings/evenings and warm days. Roasted poultry and root vegetables and pumpkin pie often comprise the holiday meal. To everything there is a season.

    1. There absolutely is a season for everything! I am glad our Thanksgiving is later in the year. With my location if we celebrated in early October, we could easily have a 90 degree Thanksgiving.

  15. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! And a big turkey dinner is my favorite meal to prepare. Even when it's just for two of us (as was the case last year with COVID), we always prepare way too much food. Which is OK -- Thanksgiving leftovers rock. :-)

  16. I do like the opportunity to have a long weekend before the December holiday season starts. I like Home for the Holidays. Holly Hunter is phenomenal as Ann Bancroft.

  18. I adore that movie, I'm so glad you like it too! I'm glad you like Christmas music throughout the year. We usually go to Adam and Gabby's for Thanksgiving since they got married. However my husband loves a turkey meal and always wants it for his birthday too which is November 18th!!!

    1. Thankfully turkey tastes good and freezes well!
Yesterday I streamed the movie, ran the sound throughout the house with echo and listened to it rather than watching but I still laughed several times.

  19. I love holidays, but Thanksgiving has always been very low key for us, because DH is an only child and their family's not close. So we eat a non-traditional dinner and I shop online.

  20. Anne,

We usually have a private, quiet Thanksgiving for just the two of us. It's been years since we've been able to do anything with the children. I hope that changes soon. Work schedules, pandemic mandates, and other blah-blah-blah things have gotten in the way. We tend to keep all of our traditions in place regardless if just us or a crowd. It makes the moments for us special. I enjoyed reading your responses. Thanks for sharing.
