When I actually remember it is Tuesday, I follow Annie@Tuesday 4. There are always 4 thematic questions asked. This week the questions are all about our kitchens. Come on and join in!
1. They say the kitchen is the heart of the home...tell us about YOUR kitchen. What is your favorite part of your kitchen?
I have some open upper cabinets on one wall. I actually had them built with doors made when we redid the kitchen, but I liked it without them so they were never installed. Now all my pots, pans, serving dishes and platters are easy to access and I like the way it looks. (Or, I like the way it looks when it is neat and tidy, which is most of the time, but there are exceptions, and then it drives me nuts until I straighten it).
2. If money were no object, what would be your "dream kitchen"?
2. If money were no object, what would be your "dream kitchen"?
I love my kitchen as it is, but I did it to my personal specs. The only thing I would do different (if space allowed) would be to have a gigantic, walk in pantry.
3. Tell us about a favorite memory from your kitchen, or from a kitchen in your past, perhaps your mother's kitchen or your grandma's kitchen?
Several years ago a band was performing in Birmingham. I invited them to come here to eat lunch, and the afternoon of the event, a huge tour bus pulled up in front of my house. About 25 people came in to have a down south bbq meal. Most congregated in the kitchen for conversations and a self serve buffet before sitting at tables set up throughout the common areas.
4. If you could invite anyone in the world (either past or present) to come visit with you in your kitchen, who would it be, and why?

Other than the obvious people I love who have passed on, I would invite Leonardo Da Vinci. I would love to ask him what inspiration lead to all his remarkable ideas that were unheard of and so far ahead of his time.
My favorite part of my dream kitchen would be a permanent chef:-)
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I don't mind the cooking but maybe a galley maid to clean up would be nice for me!
DeleteMy first little house had open cupboards and my nice stoneware was there, accessible and used. My kitchen now just lacks storage. We've talked for 30 years about building in a large pantry. There's room but not apptitude.
ReplyDelete
DeleteI would love a huge pantry, but it is something I just do not have or have room for. I don't expect to be in this house too much longer,so maybe my next house will have one.
1. I'm short, so, while it wasn't my idea, my favorite part of my kitchen is the fact that when the contractor had our range hood installed, he had the installer place it lower, so I could reach the controls easily. I also love my walk in pantry, and the fact we have a kitchen/dining room combo in this place, rather than kitchen/family room.
ReplyDelete2. My dream kitchen is currently being built--basically, island with slide-dual fuel range and counter seating, warm, honey cabinets, breakfast nook, and large, walk-in pantry with solid shelves. CAN'T WAIT!!
3. So much of our lives revolves around the kitchen, that there are too many--perhaps when the kids were younger, having them sit on the counter to help with cookies.
4. I'm pretty much happiest when it's my immediate family in my kitchen--on days when we are all getting along, of course.
I have a dual fuel stove and love it. I can't see ever having anything else.
DeleteI know you will be excited to get into your new home!
I love the look of open cabinets ... but given my distaste for Tom's stoneware (I inherited) and rubbermaid, I'm happy to hide them behind closed doors. Me, I'd have probably panicked -- but your hosting those band members must have been a fabulous experience. Have you written about it?
ReplyDeleteI could not have only open cabinets because I am just not neat enough, but I do like the ones I have. https://newhappeningsatthetable.blogspot.com/2017/01/what-in-world.html
DeleteWhat a lovely piece of music, very fitting!
ReplyDeleteI love my island. It holds all of the appliances that get used so infrequently on one side along with my cookbooks, and the other side of it has three drawers, one for towels and dish rages, a large one for my pots and pans, and the bottom drawer holds my plastic containers. It also is on wheels so can moved out of the way so I can pull out the stove and fridge to clean behind. Since we rarely sit at the table to eat our meals, we serve up from the island as well. It's so handy!
My dream kitchen would include a large pantry. I have two lazy susan's in the corners of the cabinets that I use for canned goods and other items that don't fit in the small pantry cupboard and I dislike them. Things fall off in the back and I have to lie on my back and crawl into them to retrieve the items - my arms are too short! I do like my small pantry cupboard since I had drawers installed - it make it so much easier to find things in there.
Memories of the kitchen - lots. My sister dropping the watermelon and seeing it splash it's innards from the floor to the ceiling and all over the counter and cupboards. The sight and smell of fresh homemade bread cooling on the racks when we got home from school on Monday. In my own kitchen(s), my daughter sitting on the countertop stirring the scrambled eggs at the age of 4 and more recently my grandson mix-a, mixing the cookie dough last year.
Of course, I'd love to have a visit with my mom and dad in my kitchen, though I know my mom would be quite disturbed by the lack of a place to sit and have coffee. My son's work computer dominates the table!
Take care, stay well.
The watermelon splat would definitely be memorable! Kitchens hold all kinds of memories. I forgot to mention when growing up my parents had a speaker from the stereo wired into the kitchen and they danced there nearly every night
DeleteI think all of us who don't have one would love a large pantry!
Leonardo Da Vinci…how interesting! Your kitchen sounds wonderful. I’d love a big walk-in pantry too.
ReplyDeleteOther than loved ones who have gone he is the only one I would like to talk to. I have always been fascinated by his thinking and ability to foresee so many things.
DeleteTwo things come to mind when I read about the musicians meal. One is that must have been so much fun and two is that you must have a lot of room to seat 25 people or it was nice and cozy. I too would like a big walk-in pantry, but there's not room. I'm lucky that there is room for a small one.
ReplyDeleteI am kind of lucky to have any pantry at all, also.
DeleteI used the dining room table, kitchen table and set up an 8 foot table in the den. A few of them decided to eat on the screened porch, so they could smoke after they finished their meal. Thankfully the day was warm enough and I had actually cleaned the table out there.
Your kitchen sounds like a really lovely room, Anne. I redid my kitchen about 25 years ago, but, I wish it was big enough to have a kitchen table in it. At the time, I didn't have the funds to enlarge the space, so, settled for new cabinets and a different layout.
ReplyDeleteThe only new construction we did to the kitchen when we remodeled was to change the bay window. It is about 4 inches deeper than it was originally but it added no real square footage to the kitchen. Before the remodel I had an island with a cooktop on it that went down the middle of the kitchen creating what I called 2 long open halls. You had to walk around the island to get to the refrigerator and it just did not work for me. So we ripped out the island, used the same cabinets on two of the walls, then had some built on the other side of the kitchen. Now it is visually just one big room with a rolling island that separates the cooking area from the eating area. I am a function over form person and the kitchen might not be the gorgeous trendy kitchen everyone wants, but it functions so well.
DeleteI love the green granite benchtops in our kitchen. And mourn that they are slightly too low for my comfort.
ReplyDeleteThe kitchen really does need to "fit" the cook. I don't think I have ever seen green granite, but I am guessing it is quite beautiful.
DeleteThe song at the top, "songs in the Kitchen"...that was really sweet...thanks for sharing that. I loved it. Love your story about the band coming to lunch...wow! You are brave...and must be a good cook! That must have been a real "hoot"!! I like your idea of the open cabinets except for one thing... I had a cabinet like that for a while, but the dishes got dusty...so I put glass doors on them so I could still see them, but not let them get dusty. Now all my cabinets in this kitchen have glass doors. It came that way. I might have done some differently, but it works...they have etchings on the glass so you can't see the mess except in the center. Anyway...we all learn from each other's ideas. And I enjoyed reading about yours. Thank you so much for playing along today!! Would love to see some pictures of your kitchen!
ReplyDeleteMy dishes are safely behind cabinet doors and I will admit, I have to rinse the platters off occasionally before I use them, but I use all my pots and pans so often that they never get dusty!
DeleteMy kitchen is not a pretty show house kitchen, but it works really well. Maybe one day I will post some pictures of it, but only after I have cleaned it really well. I use mine a lot!
Your kitchen sounds lovely! I love the look of open cabinets, but I'm not neat enough to have them, your kitchen sound perfect. What a fun memory with the band!
ReplyDeleteSince we don't have to pay college tuition anymore(keeping fingers crossed that our son doesn't decide to get his Masters), we are redoing our kitchen. Dh took out one door and put in an octagon window, so I can have more counter and cabinet space. Yay!I will get a pantry and a farmhouse sink too. Hoping the new layout will be better for us.
Lots of funny memories, but our first Thanksgiving after we were married, we had my folks for Thanksgiving meal. We made enough mashed potatoes to feed the threshers as my Mom used to say, but the worst part was we had left the giblets in the turkey. My Mom laughed and laughed.
I could not have totally open shelving but I am good with the couple I have!
DeleteNice that you are getting a kitchen re-do. I would love a big pantry, but it is not going to happen!
How neat on the tour bus coming to your home for lunch! I love that. The kitchen is one of my favorite rooms in the house.
ReplyDeleteI am in my kitchen more than any other room in the house (exception is when I am asleep)
DeleteOk, I gotta see photos of your kitchen, grin. I hope you had a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteA walk in pantry would be heaven!!! Happy Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteIt would be fabulous, wouldn't it?
DeleteLeonardo is a fascinating choice. Any chance we'll see some photos of your kitchen? We built a house once. That kitchen was the best one I ever had. I wish my current kitchen had a pantry, or at least a pantry cabinet.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I do have a shallow closet with shelves and that is my pantry. I think a walk in pantry would be drool worthy.
ReplyDeleteHow special that you got to host that large party of people! I think Leonardo would be fascinating choice. He was a man of many talents!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what his inspiration was with the concepts that were for foreign at the time.
