Following The Storm

The weekend began with me in a dark funk. I could not see anything but irritation and gray skies. But as usual, it just lasted a couple of days, and then I was back to my normal boring self.

Saturday: Son2, Dil2 and TGS came by to eat burgers. TGS is an absolute delight, and I can't put into words how cheery his demeanor is.

Sunday: I started a descent into a dark place, and found no real joy in the day. I suppose the possible exception would be the arrival of a new sauté pan I had ordered.
Hooray for one small joy. The pan is pretty nice.

Monday: The day began in the same foul place it had been on Sunday. Then my beloved sister came over. She is planning a baby reveal for her Husband's niece and we talked about what she could do for it. She stayed for a few hours and there was a lot of laughter, a decent lunch, and some together plans were made  for the next couple of weeks.

Tuesday: Tuesday was lovely for the most part and it was perfect for a long swim. I needed the swim badly. It was as good for my attitude as it was for my body.
Our okra had started producing and after about 3 days harvesting we had enough for a meal. I am not sure, other than a vine ripe tomato, if anything is any better than garden fresh okra.

Wednesday: I woke extremely early and started the day getting the sheets washed and changed. The best way I know to fold fitted sheets is to never fold them at all. I just put them straight from the dryer back onto the bed. (Yes I use my clothes dryer regularly. I will scrimp and save somewhere else).
TheHub worked seriously late, so after a few morning chores and a swim, I spent the day wrapped in a book.

Thursday: I did go out cherry picking a few grocery stores, came home, unloaded, put things away, then plopped down to read. I was more than happy  to have my reading interrupted when I got a phone call from a long ago former neighbor. After all these years we still talk occasionally, and pick up right where we left off.
TheHub has been seriously stressed at work and called to tell me not to cook. Instead we went to The Electric for a quick bite, then ran a couple of errands. I think he just needed to see a little life outside of the office.
While we were out and near a new to me store, I asked TheHub to pull into the parking lot. He was trying to figure out something  using the owner manual of my car and was more than happy to sit in the lot and research while I looked around. My reward was seeing an entire wall of eyelashes. I have never worn false lashes in my life, and don't intend to start now, but I will admit I found seeing row after row after row of them fascinating. Obviously there is no limit to how long they can be. If I put some of them on (assuming I could actually get them to adhere) I am not sure my eyelids could support the weight.
I just did a cursory exploration of the store because TheHub was waiting, but I am going to go back to see what I missed.

Friday: We decided to go on a proper date night. Whoo hoo! We tried to get reservations Thursday for dinner at Hot and Hot, but all they had were seats at the chef's counter. It is fun to watch the meals being cooked but we had a lot to talk about and that is not a good place to sit  and talk. Instead we went to Mikey's. The food is good, not as good as the tomato salad at Hot and Hot, but still delicious.  We were seated at a corner table, perfect for talking. Of course starting the meal with a dirty martini helped! I don't think we have had a night out like that since our anniversary last October. There were no distractions, just good food, good company, and great conversation.  And it was really nice to get semi dressed up before going out.

So this became a much better week than it started, and once again there are joys to be found every day, even if it is just the arrival of cookware.
Hopefully Saturday will be the start of a new week filled with joys. Fingers crossed it will also be a warm sunny day. I plan to start the weekend with a long swim followed but a little time apricating on the chaise.

May all your weeds be wildflowers,
Anne

  1. A new word for me! Apricate. I had to look it up before I commented. Now to figure out how to use it when I'm talking to my daughter. :)

Glad your week improved. Hopefully the stress your husband is feeling at work won't last much longer. The date night sounds like a wonderful antidote for both of you.

    1. The night out was definitely needed. There are a lot of things we needed to talk over and there has just been no time to do it.

  2. Anne,
With the humidity this week along with rain, I cannot imagine a time to line-dry sheets. What is in tomato salad? I had a "tomato salad" with bacon and Miracle Whip, but I don't know what a proper tomato salad is.

    1. This is my version of Hot and Hot's tomato salad. Their's is better because the okra is fried and they top it with crème fraiche

    2. Anne,
Thanks. I did put basil with the tomatoes and bacon.

  3. I’m sorry your week started off in a funk, but it sounds like you rebounded quickly. Freshly laundered sheets are so nice and I use my dryer too. Like you, I can save somewhere else. The okra from your garden sounds so good. I have some in The freezer I need to make for dinner.

    1. The okra has been fabulous this year,
I use my dryer all the time and have no desire to hang them outside. I have so many birds in the yard I would probably be re-washing all the time anyway.

  4. Glad you found some highlights along the way! My win was getting the boys to the doctor for their sports physicals, and uploading all of the forms for sports clearance for school. Oh, and they are healthy & doing great. The doctor was thrilled with them, & they've both grown so much since last year. No wonder they keep needing new shoes & clothes.

    1. Guys grow later than girls do, but they seem to literally grow every couple of weeks. I can remember having to buy shoes about every 6 weeks. and the jeans never wore out, but were outgrown.

  6. Too funny about happening on a wall of eyelashes! I'm glad you and your hubby were able to carve out time for a nice dinner and conversation.

    1. I must be living under a rock because I did not know there were that many people in Birmingham who wore eyelashes often enough to have an entire aisle dedicated to them.
Now I think just for kicks and giggles I am going to have to go back and grab some just to see if I can even get the blooming things on my eyes

  7. I regularly use the dryer and never feel bad about it! I save other ways. I saw a hospital nurse, not too long ago, wearing false eyelashes so long a few tips actually brushed against her glasses! Silly.

  8. I'm so sorry Anne. It's hard being in the dark. I'm glad people who bring joy were there to brighten the week. I laughed about the wall of eye lashes.

  11. I'm so glad that the week ended better than it began. Glad you got to have a proper date night, too. Thank you for teaching me a new word! I had to look it up!

    1. I knew the word but had never used it either written or verbally. Using arcane words that occupy space in my head is going to be a new joy. At least until I become bored with it.

  12. I'm glad your week improved. Someone else said having your sister over would certainly help and she was right! And I'm glad you and your hubs got some alone time too. He must be as exhausted as you are fed up! How about trying on some of those fake eyelashed to see if he notices!

    1. I might have to do that, but I can't imagine how "painted" I would look wearing them.

  13. Treaders has a great idea. Get some of those eyelashes and next time you're in a funk, try them on. That's got to be fun. Even better, do it with your sisiter. :)

  14. Hello! I know the feeling you began your week with. It can be paralyzing. I am so happy that you felt better as the week went on. I do the exact same thing with my sheets! I don't like to "fold" them because they always seem to get that musty smell!?! Have a cozy day, my friend.

    1. I have never understood why you should fold sheets when putting them right back on the bed makes so much more sense.

  15. As soon as you mentioned the swim, I thought, yes, that is the perfect out of that funk.
