It's a Little Late (Tuesday 4)

I actually remembered it was Tuesday today, but I was busy doing other things, so thank you to Annie @ Tuesday 4 for the questions this week.

1.What is/are your favorite meal(meals) to eat and to cook?
I don't know that I have a favorite meal to eat. I like a variety of foods but I  guess either Cuban or Thai foods are my favorite types of food.
I like to cook, but for meals I enjoy things that come together quickly. I rarely spend more than 15 minutes putting a meal together, though the physical cooking time might be a bit more.

2. How often do you cook at home and what kind of  meals do you make?
It depends. Some weeks I cook 6 nights and some weeks we do take out 3 or 4 times. In the summer we have a lot of vegetable meals or meat and a salad, and in the winter we have a bunch of soups or stews

3. When you go out to eat what foods do you find yourself ordering most?
Takeout (thanks Covid)  we do a lot of Greek or Mexican
In a sit down restaurant (I miss this badly) I generally order fish

4. Can you recommend a restaurant in your area?
My favorite restaurant is Highland's Bar and Grill, but it has not re-opened since the initial pandemic shut down. According to their website they are scheduled to open again in late summer, but with the insane Covid case load here I am doubtful if it will happen.
The best food for the price is probably Tazikis but go to one of the 3 original ones before they started franchising.  The food is very good and it is very reasonable
Why do you like it?
Besides having, hands down, the most delicious meals in town, Highlands offers a true dining experience that does not skimp on a single detail to make it perfect. If you go there prepare to drop some coins, but for special occasions it is absolutely worth it.
The chef/owner also owns two other restaurants in town that are currently operational. Che Fon Fon, which is more like a Parisian bistro and Bottega, which is Italian inspired, but don't go there expecting a pasta restaurant. Both have food that is as delicious as Highlands, but the experience is quite different.

So come on and play along!

  1. Frank Stitt of Highlands Bar and Grill is from Cullman. I have met him, but only briefly. I worked with his mother in scouts. She had a beautiful home with a bathtub in front of a huge window that looked out onto her garden. Actually, I know her brother better.

  2. Take away is the ONLY option here at the moment. Restaurants are closed during the lockdown and I fear that some will not survive.

    1. There have been several restaurants here that have already closed forever.

  3. Daughter and I usually prefer takeout to dining in a restaurant. :)

    1. I miss going to really good restaurants. We did not do it often but I loved it. Plus we had really good conversations over a leisurely meal.

  4. Fun questions! If I am ever down south, I'll check out Highlands Bar and Grill and Tazikis.

1.I think Brazilian is my favorite although I love Mexican and most south American cuisine.
2.With covid, I usually cook 7 days a week. We eat all sorts of things, from American classics like meatloaf, to stir fry,to lasagna but I think my favorite that I have made lately has been skillet shawarma which I could eat every week.
    3. Takeout is the occasional pizza. My son picked us up some tortas last night, since I really didn't want to cook. We did get takeout Brazilian last year for our anniversary but the restaurant was closed this year.
4.Gaucho is my favorite. I do love the show from Kabuki though. And the Farmhouse is good. Maybe someday life will get back to normal?
I would love to try one of those Brazilian steakhouses where they come by your table with lots of meats to try. :)

    1. Highland's is hands down the best restaurant in town!
I like Brazilian and Peruvian food too.
We have a Brazilian steak house. We call it going to the meat parade!

    2. Meat parade!!...my husband would be in heaven. :)

  5. My husband would be happy if we ordered out Mexican more, and we probably would if we had some closer Mexican restaurants. In the meantime, Cal Tort gets a fair amount of our business.

    1. We order Mexican often because a restaurant close to our house has excellent curbside pickup and is pretty tasty.

  6. 1. I go through phases of favorites. When all else fails, though, I will opt to have DH or one of the boys grill steaks, or make a roast beef dinner--always good.
    2. I rarely eat dinner out. I try to vary my meals, but lately, I've been fixing a lot of risotto, baked fish, and fish and homemade chips.
    3. The only places I can tolerate around here are a Mexican restaurant, and the local golf course. I like the former's carne asada, and I've been working through the very limited menu at the golf course.
    4. Our area has horrible restaurants. I've yet to find a restaurant within 25 miles which I get excited about. Generally, I go because I want a break, but find I'm irritated over crappy food, lousy service, ridiculous prices, and, always, Always, ALWAYS, ill behaved kids.

  7. We really missing going out to restaurants, too. We've done plenty of takeout and delivery, but it's just not the same thing. Looks like it's going to be a few months yet before restaurants are a possibility for us. :-(

    1. I miss sitting and having conversations over a cup of coffee and a shot of frangelico after the meal. I know I can do the same thing here but. . .

  8. I, too, miss going out to restaurants. I enjoy the whole 'experience' ... so much more than just consuming food. Now I'm craving a good Cuban coffee!

  9. I love home fried chicken and all the fixins. However, I have not fried chicken in 20 years or more. And, I don't need that many mashed potatoes! A good salad is a favorite, too. Bright Star is where we did go before Covid. Ruby Tuesday was the best place to in Cullman. We are limited, though. I could eat Italian food every night but I don't need the pasta.

    1. I used to like the Steakhouse but I understand it is not good anymore. I also hear 421 Public House is great.

    2. The AllSteak? I have not been there in years. And, have not been to 421. I will keep that in mind.

  10. My favorite meals are those that someone else cooks. :) Though I do have my faves - at this time of the year, I think of my mom's fall meal - hamburger patties with baked potatoes and corn on the cob (veg from the garden) and baked apples. I'm a big fan of Shepherd's pie too, but in the summer I prefer salads.
I cook at least 3-4 times a week with leftovers to be re-heated. Other nights it's sandwiches (for my son) and salad (for me). We've done takeout a few times a month usually fast food.
I prefer to prep food in the morning and do the cooking later.
I miss the restaurant but generally because it means getting together with friends. I don't even have a local restaurant I'd recommend. The places we went were chains that had mediocre food and just okay service. It was being together that was the important part.

    1. I will agree about food someone else makes being the favorite. I do morning prep a lot of times just because it is not as hot.
      I miss restaurants badly!

  11. It's so difficult picking one particular cuisine as your favourite isn't it. I flip between Thai and Lebanese (at the moment) but then as long as I'm not cooking it, it's pretty much all good!

  12. I am like you, I do enjoy food and I like to cook, BUT...life is busy and I don't have 2 hours to spend preparing a meal. Quick and easy usually wins the day! We have a small restaurant here that is supposed to be like a Parisian bistro, but I haven't gotten there yet. I've heard it's good. As you said, maybe if life ever returns to normal?

    1. I think quick and easy is the way to go nearly every day!

  13. I haven't been to a really good restaurant in a long time but I do really love a nice restaurant. Until a few months ago I had a pub meal with my parents once a week and a coffee with a daughter two or three times a week.
I think Thai food is my favourite but do I need to choose? we cook at home most nights and I try to keep it vegan most days although we also have some chicken, fish and kangaroo

    1. I don't think we need to choose at all. I think we need to enjoy whatever we have, whether it is a favorite or just sustenance.

  14. Italian and Greek cuisine tops the list of favorites. Nothing beats a good pizza or pasta dish, both of which I enjoy preparing at home. I like one-pot meals - casseroles, sheet pan dinners, soups, salads loaded with veggies and protein. The majority of my meals are prepared at home. I do prefer eating the food I've prepared myself. Menu planning and food prep takes me to my happy place. The menu is driven by the demands of the day and what's available seasonally. I like any well-prepared food when eating out. No judgement, but I've been known to order liver and onions because it's not something I usually prepare at home. In the local NE Alberta town near my home is a great pizza place - Magic Pizza - and a Chinese food restaurant - Taste Buds - that's very popular. In the other direction is The Twisted Fork that draws on local vendors. I like to cook and eat; I'm not sure which I like more.
