Tuesday 4

When I remember it is Tuesday I like to join in with the questions posed by Annie at
Tuesday 4.  She asks 4 questions weekly using a theme for the day. This Tuesday we are digging in and talking about us.

1. How are you unique or different from your friends or family?
We are all unique, some of us are just hardwired differently. I am neither a pessimist nor an optimist, but consider myself a realist. Even with my realist stance, I try very hard to find the upside of most situations.
I am sarcastic, love to laugh and find myself an easy target to laugh at. Years ago a friend gave me a a birthday present. It is a lovely small shadow box with the following saying on it "Blessed are the cracked, for they let in the light." I hope my strange sense of humor does lighten someone's day occasionally.
I love a good verbal joust, but refuse to do battle with anyone who is unarmed.
I am kind but I am not sweet at all. I am thoughtful but scatterbrained, which is why a sympathy card might not get sent exactly on time.
I consider and regularly describe myself as delightfully odd.

How typical are you?
I was born with regulation equipment: arms, legs, hands, feet, digits, eyes, nose, hair, belly button. . . I live in the suburbs and drive a van even though my kids are grown. So I guess I am somewhat typical in a slightly skewed way.

2.  How do you spend your spare time?
Asking me this during these Covid times hurts my heart. Pre Covid TheHub and I had a fairly full social life, which I no longer have. I read and watch TV but rarely watch network TV. I do spend time with my beloved sister, and have a couple of good friends who I keep in contact with regularly. I had just started rejoining the world but our local covid numbers are climbing at an alarming rate, so I am home with the exception of going to buy groceries or necessities.
At night, TheHub and I tend to watch either movies, documentaries, or some series either on Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu. I am anxiously waiting for "What We Do in the Shadows" to return in September

3. What was high school like for you?
I enjoyed school, had a lot of friends, made good grades, and took way too much math. My dad believed females should take every higher math available to them to equalize the playing field, because traditionally males took more math courses. That would have been a great idea if I were even remotely interested in a career in math or the sciences.
I was not in the A+ popularity group in high school, but was more in the A- B+ group. I knew just about everyone and just about everyone knew me. I was in several clubs,  the high school choir and ensemble, a high school sorority, a candy striper at Children's hospital,  and a volunteer hostess at an antebellum house. (There is no telling how many stranger's photos I was in. We had to wear full southern garb complete with hoop skirts and people always wanted pictures.)

4. This question has multiple parts:
a. Handbag: designer style or any will do? I never carry a handbag. I am a full on back pack gal and even have a small "dress" backpack for nicer outfits.  For everyday I use a Vera Bradley bag, but I also have just ordered a new dual wear bag from Noha Nadler*.
If I am dressed in evening wear, I carry either a black silk clutch  or a small tapestry clutch . I have had both for decades.

b. Pajamas or night gown?
Gown but I am very particular about the gown. I only wear very short gowns with spaghetti straps to bed. Sometimes, though, if we are watching TV late at night I will get comfortable and  throw on a lightweight gown (summer) or flannel gown (winter) over my short gown. But I have to take it off when I sleep. I can't stand anything covering my legs or shoulders when I sleep other than a sheet and blanket. I think it has to do with feeling restricted or confined.
I do have flannel pajama pants that I wear with a sweat shirt around the house at night sometimes in the winter, but that is the only pajama wearing I do.

c. Shoes: sturdy or pretty ?
Comfortable and weather appropriate! If they can be comfortable and cute, fantastic! But comfort wins hands down every time. Flip flops are my go to shoes for everyday until the weather get really cold, but some of them are cute(ish).

d.Home decor: classic, modern, farm house style, traditional?
In my foyer one of the first things you see when entering my house is a 3 foot chimp holding a serving tray. What more is there to say?

e. Movies: feel good, drama, romance, action?
It really does depend on my mood and if the screen writing is good. Bad writing is bad writing no matter how big the budget or what the movie genre is. The plot construction has to be believable and the soundtrack has to be well done for me to enjoy a movie. Good acting is an added bonus.
I am not a big fan of special effects that are added for shock value.

So come on and join in. Let me know a little more about you!

*I have known Noha since she was a little girl and ordered the bag to support her endeavor. I am also thrilled to give her company a plug. She is a lovely young woman with an eye for design and a wonderful heart.

  1. It's always fun to learn a little more about you each week.

I drive a van even though my kids are grown, too. It is a very handy car and so easy to pack when we are going on a trip because there is so much room.

    1. I might have been a little too open, but that is part of me too. I kind of shoot from the hip.

  3. Fun to read! I do admire your dad's approach to math. Also not a math fan, but agree generally on leveling the playing field. Luckily, both of my kids got their math skills (& patience) from their dad. :-)

    1. I was not so happy with his approach when I was a Sr in high school talking Trig, Analytical Geometry, and Pre.Cal. while all my other friends coasted!

  4. Comfort for me every time.
Stylish and I have never had an intimate relationship and we are drifting further and further apart.
I love the cracked lets the light in saying. There is obviously a LOT of light here with me.

    1. I am not stylish at all, though I do happen to have a personal style. It is just nowhere near being on point, unless comfortable and somewhat frumpy is fashionable now

  5. It was fun reading your answers! I love your shadow box saying! I want to see a pic of that chimp butler.
    1. I've been told that I have a dry sense of humor. I'll take it as a complement whether they meant it that way or not. ;)
2.I usually read during my spare time. Probably should be doing more cleaning and such though.
3.High school was ok. I made good grades and had some good friends. Not part of the "in" crowd, but didn't really bother me. I've only been to one high school reunion and doubt if I will go to another one.
4.a.I carry a vintage Aigner crossbody bag that I got at goodwill. My husband used to buy me Aigner bags when we were first married so when I saw that one, I had to get it. Will check out your friend's shop though.
    b. sleepshirt
c.sturdy shoes since I broke my ankle and have plates and pins. One foot is bigger than the other now, so no cute shoes for me anymore. :(
d.eclectic? living room is mission style but the rest is a mix
e.I enjoy fantasy and action movies. Give me Lord of the Rings or most Marvel movies and I am happy.I also like disaster movies. As a family, we enjoy Disney animation. My husband is just glad that I don't drag him to see romance movies.

    1. It is so nice to see what others have as answers to these questions.
I had an Aigner bag long long ago and before that a John Romain bag. But that was back when I gave a fig what I was wearing or carrying. Now my only criteria is big enough to hold my junk and something that will fit on my back.

  6. Movies. What about musicals? Am I the only person who loves musicals? Give me Judy Garland any day but I'm also a sucker for the Blues Brothers among others (one caveat, no John Travolta ones.)

  7. Enjoyed reading your answers. :) Comfortable when it comes to clothes and shoes for me, too, please! And any old handbag as long as it has a sturdy shoulder strap and big enough for everything that I tend to carry with me!

  8. What an amusing intro! (*grinning my way throughout*) Right away, I thought of someone deserving of a shadowbox like yours. I'll have to look out on Etsy -- but right now I'm gonna put Toby Keith on replay.

I keep my shadowbox in the bay window so I can see it every day.

  9. 1. I am quite more liberal than most of my friends and acquaintances, (but not my BEST friend.) I am very different from my siblings in that I am a woman, they are men. I am fairly typical, except that I am quite small in stature--I am under 5 feet. I'm fairly intelligent, very well educated, outspoken, kindhearted, considerate, and agnostic. I also swear too much for some people, but the f-bomb just sometimes fits.
    2. I spend my spare time reading, quilting, baking, cooking, crafting and answering these quizzes! Lately I've been watching the neighbor's little girl to help out--I typically detest other people's kids, but she's easy to have around.
    3. I detested high school. I was a very serious student, in the national honor society, and ran cross country, but, beyond that, I hated it--I was outspoken, and very liberal even back then--not a good look in a dying New England mill town. My senior year I went to the local state college where my father was a department chair, because I just couldn't bear the high school--I LOVED that. I also spent a lot of time in the dance studio. I did have a few very good friends, however, also bookish, artistic free thinkers.
    4. a)Over the shoulder, black leather--I like to get a good handbag, and have it for decades. I currently have a bona fide Gucci bag, I bought for $4.00 at the thrift shop b) Only white, sleeveless, 100% cotton percale short nightgowns. NO SUBSTITUTES. My nightgowns are probably the most expensive part of my wardrobe. c)Pretty shoes for going out, but sturdy for the better part of the day. My feet are all jacked up from dance and running, so I treat them kindly. d) traditional--I love antique hard rock maple, and traditional wing back leather recliner chairs, and leather couches. Most of my hard furnishings are second hand, but you wouldn't know e) I rarely have the patience to sit through movies, actually, with few exceptions: The Harry Potter franchise, and historical dramatizations. I generally detest movie theaters because I find the audio far too loud.

    1. I think the audio is often too loud in theaters also. I prefer to watch movies at home where I can control the volume. Pre Covid we would go to the movie theater several times a week and found the early evening show generally had less volume and was more enjoyable. I guess since there were fewer people they thought the volume did not have to cover as much popcorn crunching as the 7 pm showing and could be set lower.

  11. The Chimp is names Sneaky Jorge. We had a family naming contest and decided it was perfect for him since he leaves chocolate coins on his tray for my granddaughter to find every morning she is here.

  13. Great post! It's fun to learn more about you.

I definitely agree we're all unique though some of us are more unique than others. It's funny because I've been called normal by some people and yet I'm certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Like you, I'm pretty sarcastic and as my mom would say, I call a spade a spade and not a shovel. Gotten myself into trouble on more than one occasion for my brutal honesty.

I don't think of myself as typical, though I live in a standard neighbourhood with typical garage in the front houses and a range of couples with kids (teenagers or grown kids). I'm the only single parent I know of on the block and have an adult child living with me. I tend to a bit of a loner, and am quite happy in my own company. Though I must admit the length of this pandemic has been a bit much.

Spare time? - since I'm retired I guess most people would consider it all spare time. I love to garden, craft, read, and walk with my camera in hand. Most of all I love to travel and miss it so much.

High school was difficult for me. I was a bus kid (strike one), matured early (strike two), and a bit of nerd (strike 3). I had a small group of like minded friends but had low self esteem, tried to please everyone, and spent a lot of time in my head. It made for some dark times. Like one of the other posters, I attended one of our school reunions and will never bother again. I really didn't like many of those people.

I've carried a purse since I was in high school, wear nightgowns in the summer and two piece jammies in the winter, and my shoes would be described as utilitarian. When I was younger I wore platforms or heels, since I only reached 5'2" but I suffered several sprains and gave them up. Home decor is eclectic (isn't that a fancy word for hodgepodge?) though I probably skew more to traditional.

As for movies, I don't have the attention span to sit through most movies. Television programs I enjoy tend to be dramas.

    1. I went to my 10th year class reunion, and though I enjoyed school I am not one of those who think it was the best time in my life. I have had a m mostly wonderful life but I am on the other side of the hill and I am still expecting the "best" time. I had much rather look forward than backward.
