I am very glad I am not one of those who takes myself or my plans too seriously. If I were so inclined, I am pretty sure I would always be teed off. My main goal with meal planning is to use what I have on hand and minimize food waste. As long as that is happening I am fine with the end results. After all, we never go hungry unless it is by choice. Somedays meals are better than others, but even the ho hum ones are ok.
Other than occasionally burning something to a crisp, I can only think of a couple of meals I have ever made that could not be salvaged. To save you all from an experiment gone horribly wrong, don't ever try to glaze meatballs with a honey, instant coffee, mustard sauce. If it sounds horrid to you, that is because it was, and went straight to the garbage can
Want to share details of your worst cooking disaster?
Obviously I have never planned anything like that since we were young marrieds! Maybe that is why we have been married so long?
What I had planned:
Spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad
Veggie dinner (squash, okra, air fried green tomatoes, coleslaw)
Chicken divan, rice, tomato onion cucumber salad
Grilled tuna, salad, rice or not (jury is still out)
Eat out or take out
Garlic butter chicken tenders, tossed salad,
Leftovers or takeout, salad or coleslaw
What we really ate:
Monday: I had thawed the ground chuck and Italian sausage last week and browned it, so it had to be eaten
Spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, dinner rolls
Tuesday: Trying to use up things from the refrigerator freezer
Chicken divan, sliced tomatoes, ( no rice because I forgot about it)
Wednesday: Absolute summer food deliciousness
Squash casserole, air fried okra and green tomatoes
Thursday: Forgot it was the first round of the NFL Draft. TheHub wanted a ball game meal. Easy!
Sloppy Joes, cuke tomato onion salad, chips
Friday: Date nights have made a comeback!
Dinner at The Electric, delicious flatbreads, salad
Saturday: The rains held off and it was the perfect night for cooking outside.
Grilled tuna steaks, salad, saffron rice
Sunday: Had the opportunity to have dinner with DIL2 and Son2.
Dinner at The Purple Onion, assorted stuff
Possibilities for this week
1.Veggie meal (TBD based on what the produce stand has)
2. Mexican street corn salad, guacamole and tortilla chips
3. Grilled burgers and fixings, coleslaw
4. Grilled chicken, caulitato salad, sliced tomatoes
5. Philly chicken cheese"steak" sandwiches, coleslaw
6. Out to eat
7. Leftover spaghetti sauce (frozen last Monday) over bucatini, mixed greens
Have a great week staying on plan, going off plan or with no plan at all!
"...the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry." and mine oft do.
ReplyDeletePlans are merely suggestions!
DeleteYour menu sounds great. This week will be a combo of things made from a big batch of grilled chicken, as well as items from the freezer. We're heading to a wedding this weekend, so we will also eat a few meals on the go.
ReplyDeleteI am still trying to eat mainly from the freezer and it is taking me forever to use things in there.
DeleteAside from making something into charcoal, I have only made one meal that I considered a fail. I refused to eat it, but my husband said it was fine and ate it with relish. I have forgotten what it was since it was way back in 1966 right after we married.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone makes at least one thing that is inedible.
DeleteHooray for the return of Date Night. And for meals almost every night...
ReplyDeleteBlogger has been a little funny about comments. I have noticed a few of mine never posted
DeleteYay! Date nights are back! That's good to hear! :) I'll have a grilled burger with a side of the corn salad, please! :) I went a bit off my plan, too, but, it worked out well.
ReplyDeleteI am thrilled date nights are back (at least right now because who knows how long this will last)
DeleteI have burnt a few dishes in all these years of cooking too. Sometimes, the dish may turn out too salty but, I think I could always fix those. I can't think of a cooking disaster but, that's probably more of a memory issue. Lol!
ReplyDeleteYes I can fix the over salted or things that were too sweet, but those meatballs were beyond horrible!
DeleteHello! Well, I clearly remember the very first meal I made my husband when we returned from our honeymoon! It was the hottest July day, and in our little 2nd story apartment, I made stuffed peppers. I didn't know to cover them, so the nevr got soft! I still remember Steve eating them, almost 31 years later!!!
ReplyDeleteTheHub actually ate a couple of the meatballs. I just couldn't. I can think of worse things to eat than crisp peppers!
DeleteHow appropriate to have a Sweeny Todd clip for worst meals. :) The disasters I remember the most are the burnt ones.
ReplyDeleteIt just kind of popped into my head when I was thinking of a disaster meal.
DeleteI think spaghetti with meat sauce is my all time favourite home cooked meal. I wouldn't buy it from a restaurant because I want to try all the other things but I never, ever get sick of a good spag bol.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, plans or not :)
It is one of TheHubs favorites also. I think I could serve it two times each week and he would never get tired of it.
DeleteSounds delicious. I want the summer veggies. Regine.

I am so happy summer veggies are beginning to come in. Even my little garden in my yard has veggies forming.
DeleteI remember my former mother-in-law saying that as a young bride she took the time and spent ages making stuffed quail for her new husband, only for him to come home and say "what the hell is that"? and she never made it again! Oh dear, what don't you do for young love!
ReplyDeleteI might have offered suggestions on where to stuff that stuffed quail!
DeleteMy mom had a stove with 2 dials - one for temp and one to set to bake, broil. Didn't I set the dial to broil when I put the banana loaf in the oven. The loaf was fed to the dogs, literally. My dad asked if anyone noticed that the dogs turned to lick their butts to get the taste out of their mouths! The last fail was pizza on the grill, too charred to eat. I'm still eating leftover tomato/ chickpea/chard simmer now over pasta vs rice (this has been around the kitchen a few nights already). There was also hot dogs, pickle soup, BLT sandwich this past week. I made a pot of butternut squash/pumpkin soup yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI am still snickering at your Dad's comment!
DeleteYup, I plan all the time, then change things at the last minute. Unless, as you did for your Monday meal, I had ingredients ready that HAD to be used. :-)
ReplyDeleteUnless something is about to ruin, all bets are off when it concerns the plan.
