The Bard said it best in his play "Twelfth Night"
"If music be the food of love, play on"
Let's skew his meaning a bit and see just where the love of food and the love of music takes us.

Hollywood Thoughts
Annie@Tuesday 4 had some questions for us today about Hollywood. Though I do enjoy movies I have never been particularly star struck, and look at what they do for a living as just a job. Being famous does not influence me one way or another, and I sure as heck do not need to know their opinions on much of anything. Well, unless they are really good cooks and share recipes!
This week Annie writes, "According to the late Jordan Maxwell, Hollywood is named for the fact that the holly was used for magic wands by the Druids. This is where the term, 'Hollywood Magic' comes from. People are under its spell! Another story says that H.J. Whitley, the father of Hollywood, saw a Chinese man hauling wood on the hills overlooking the future site and asked him what he was doing. 'I holly wood' he said, meaning hauling wood. It occurred to Whitley that holly wood was a great name for his new town."
1 During WW2 Marilyn Monroe was an aircraft factory inspector. She was no dumb blonde but had an above average IQ. Do you know some Hollywood or record industry trivia?
The only thing I know is what I read once about Hedy Lamarr. She supposedly invented a radio system to jam torpedos during WW2, but it was not fitted onto Navy ships until the 60's
2. Would you share with us the funniest movie you have ever seen?
When I was younger I loved the screwball movie"What's Up Doc" I like just about anything with Madeline Kahn.
How about the most dramatic?
Gotta be Madame X with Lana Turner. It was on TV back when there used to be a late movie. My sister and I watched it and both cried like babies at the end.
3. Has a movie ever really moved you or changed the way you see things? Probably but nothing I can recall right at this moment, and I am not in the mood to really think too much about it right now.
4. Do you have movie nights at your house with special snacks, treats etc.? If not movies, was there something else around which you created a special family night?
Once the pandemic began we started having movie nights almost every night, but there were no special treats or snacks. Both of us know what we like to snack on, and where to find them. Though occasionally if one of us made popcorn we would share it with the other.
I can't say I'm over impressed with Hollywood either - it's just people doing their jobs (some doing them very well though) and the rest is magic created by the cameramen, the make-up artists, and so on! That being said, as our building at work was at one time linked to the High Commissioner for Refugees' building (they later moved out), whenever they had a celebrity coming to visit as the new HCR "Ambassador" they would ask to use our side of the building for interviews/photos because it was more beautiful. That's how I got to see Princess Diana, not that I ran down there to look (I just stuck my head out the office window). Oh and Sophia Loren - both truly were very beautiful. My friend worked in the "top guy's" office when Colin Firth came in and said he truly was gorgeous and asked if she could have a photo taken with him - and he said of course. So cheeky bugger that she is, she said "oh I'm so glad you're not just 5 feet 4 tall", to which he replied "are lot of them are you know, it's all just smoke and mirrors"! Lucky her!
I am not saying I would not look if they were around, I just don't care what they think about much of anything. Some are incredibly talented and some, well. We did see Scarlet Johansson on Broadway once, and all I can say is she is made for film. She did not do Maggie (cat on a hot tin roof) any favors.
with my son now working in the business, I'm less star struck than I might have been before. I always think of Gone with the Wind Star Leslie Howard being shot down in WWII when I think of movie stars mixed with world events, though I know he was not true Hollywood.
1. Don Knotts was a ventriloquist in the army during WWII. 2.Princess Bride, is one of our favorites...twu wuv...inconceivable... I wuv the Lord of the Rings series. 3.can't really think of anything since I usually watch movies for entertainment 4.We have movie nights, but it is usually pizza or snacks. I have made meatloaf, masked potatoes when we watched A Christmas story or elven bread when we watched Lord of the Rings.
We have had theme meals but most are based on series ends. Like prison food when Orange is the New Black ended or all sorts of odd foods for Game of Thrones ending.
I really don't do movies. I like to stop and think about things which is why books are perfect for me, and movies are something I could only do at home. Alone. And no, I pay very little attention to what movie stars say about anything other than their profession. I don't ask my accountant questions about the environment either. I believe in talking to the experts.
I'm not a movie buff, in fact I find it difficult to sit down and actually watch a movie so most of these questions are beyond my capabilities or knowledge.
I do recall seeing "The Help" in the theatre before I read the book, and for once I actually liked the movie better. Normally it's the other way around. But if you were to ask me who any of the actors were in the film, I couldn't tell you.
I am much less enamored with Hollywood than I was when I was a child. Then the opportunity to meet a star in person or just to watch them on television or in the movies what's my greatest thrill. I loved Elvis Presley and I loved Tarzan. Today I would have to say my greatest thrill is the Yellowstone series with Kevin Costner.
1. I probably do know a lot of movie or record industry trivia, but darn if I can think of even one bit right now. 2. Funniest, oh boy, that's tough, perhaps,"Blazing Saddles," and "High Anxiety." (See a connection?) Also, "Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail." 3. The "Harry Potter" series. Seeing Harry tucked away in the cupboard by the Dursleys in the first movie immediately brought me to mind of the neurodivergent kids, and how they are treated. 4. I don't have the patience to watch movies lately. (Well, for the past 5 years or so.) I also don't do "special family nights." I feel like the me saying "You're going to have fun and like it, dammit!" That said, I would and do still, almost always, drop whatever I'm doing to play a game, watch a show, or work a puzzle with my kids.
Used to love movies, but it's been years since I've seen a current release (not saying I don't eventually see them -- but it can take quite a while). We used to watch a movie every Friday night, and many Saturday ones as well, but have gotten out of the habit. So we have a huge number to catch up on!
We don't watch movies that much either at home or in the theater. However when the kids were little, we did have movie night with popcorn and soda. Big treats for the time.
Oh let's play! 1. I remember reading that Geena Davis was a Mensa member. 2. There are lots of funny movies that I liked but, "High Anxiety" came to my mind right away. As for the dramatic one, I'd say Me Before You. I cried my eyes out at the end. 3. Matrix! I agree that it is one's own choice between the real world and an artificial one especially nowadays. 4. Well, I live alone. I do not have designated movie nights. I sometimes pop some corn but, snacking is not a must.
I saw a documentary about Hedy. I think it was on PBS. She was brilliant. The government never paid her for her invention and her contributions were not widely known.
Hey y'all thanks for leaving a comment. They are much appreciated. I read them all and do my best to respond to them, except for trolls or spam and I delete those suckers forever.

I tend to agree!
DeletePS. I received a very welcome card yesterday. Many, many thanks.
DeleteGlad it was well received.

I liked the book The Help but I think the movie was so well was that it brought the characters to life.
DeleteViola Davis is a fabulous actress! Very underrated as far as I'm concerned.
DeleteNever heard of Madame X
ReplyDeleteIt is an old movie with Lana Turner and John Forsythe

ReplyDeleteI do like Yellowstone!
DeleteI remember going to see Madame X with my mother when I was probably 12 or 13. It was shown on the TV, not too long ago, and I watched it, again.
ReplyDeleteI bought the DVD for my sister several years ago. I could get it from her and watch it again.

I almost put Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein as my funniest movies.
Deletefunniest movie--Cat Ballou.
ReplyDeleteNo movie nights.
Too ill think more.
When we sold Mom and Dad's house we got rid of Dad's Cat Ballou soundtrack.
DeleteMadame X = heartbreak. I'm going to try and find it again.
ReplyDeleteIt is isn't it!

ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I'm late to the party, but I think Raising Arizona is hilarious. (Nicholas Cage & Holly Hunter are great.)
ReplyDeleteThis was a good one. We have a family movie night once a week with pizza. Just something different to do.
