What The Future Travelers Might Wonder

                                                                   Tuesday 4 post
Todays post is all about what future travelers might think if they saw your home just as it is today.

My first thought about time was to post Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce, but then I remembered Led Zeppelin and thought  Kashmir might be more appropriate for time differences.

1.  Let's pretend that it is 50 years into the future, and explorers have just discovered your house, "frozen in time" exactly as it is today. Everything is preserved, even the food, but of course no one has lived there for fifty years.  What do you think would be their first reaction as they walk in the door of your house? "Why is there a carved chimpanzee who is holding a silver tray, while dressed as a butler, in the foyer?

2.  What would the things left in your house tell the explorers about you?
We read a lot, love music, dishes, tomatoes, and green beans.

3.  What kinds of books would they discover on your bookshelves or beside your chair/bed?
We have a library/guest suite that has about 1,500 books. They are in order by genre, alphabetized by author. There is something there for everyone.

4.  What things would they discover in your closets or cabinets that would make them wonder why on earth you were saving it?  Pillows, they would wonder why in the world I have so many bed pillows. After we sold the lake place, everything came to my house. Anything we could donate to either charity or neighbor kids moving to their first college apartment, we gave away. But no one wants pillows. We had sleeping arrangements for 15 at the lake place and naturally had pillows for each sleeper.
Now I am in a quandary. I don't want all these stupid pillows, but I also don't want to create unnecessary textile waste. So they take up space in a closet waiting for who knows what. Maybe the explorers will take them and put them to good use?

If you feel so inclined, join in the merriment and post your own answers either here or on your personal blog, but be sure to follow the link and add your blog to her post.

And now it is pouring down____again!

  1. We have rain forecast but it is so far conspicuous by its absence.
I suspect that time travellers would wonder whether this is a home - or a library.
And thanks for the Led Zeppelin reminder.

    1. We have entirely too many books and need to start getting rid of some that we will never pick up again.

  2. A few years ago I'd have seen your library and thought I was in Heaven. (Since my own eyesight is circling the drain I've gone over to Audible.) When I was still working at the resort in Phoenix, Housekeeping solved the problem of storage by putting pillows, linenes, etc. those vacuum pump bags.

You're probably getting the ugly storm that came through here a while ago - lost power and a tree next door to lightning.

    1. The sky is that weird grey with a tinge of green right now. I am fine with the lightning and thunder, but want no high winds. The ground is so wet I am afraid some of the giant oaks around the house might uproot.

  3. Pillows--I have read that dog pounds want pillows for their animals. When I have something I don't want, I put it on the curb with a free sign or take it to a poor neighborhood and offer it to people in the grocery store parking lot. I suspect your pillows are of good quality, in good shape, and clean and bug-free. In a sale in your neighborhood, I would buy pillows without fear. But, the way things are, some people would still be afraid of them.

  4. Fun questions! I want to see a picture of that chimpanzee.
    My answers:
    1. They sure liked music, since there is a piano, organ, hammered dulcimer and dulcimer in my living room.
    2. Lots of cat hair, cat toys, etc.
    3. Most of my books are on kindle now, I have my Bible beside my bed. My husband has computer programming and woodworking books.
4.My wedding dress is boxed up. My daughter will never wear it since I weighed about 100 pounds when I got married. I thought about turning it into a baptismal dress if I ever have grandchildren, but I doubt if that will really happen.

    1. I will have to post a photo of him. His name is Sneaky Jorge and when my granddaughter is here, he seems to come to life in the middle of the night and leaves chocolate coin candies on his tray for her. Sometimes he will put on a cap and hide the coins underneath it.

    2. My wedding dress was at Mom's house and when we cleaned her house out, I posted it on the local Buy Nothing Facebook Page.

  6. I enjoyed reading your answers! Can you donate your extra pillows? Will a homeless shelter take them? Or, as Practical Parsimony suggested, an animal shelter?

    1. A homeless shelter will not but I can contact the Humane Society and see if they will take them

  7. I could use some new pillows and would happily take some off your hands. Too bad you aren't closer.

  8. 1. Why so many shoes by the door? Did they have more feet 50 yrs ago?
    2. A well-stocked pantry & recipe books: must like to cook & eat; personal art that reflects love of nature & the seasons & provides memories of past pets; enjoys a good laugh - why else would there be a wall decor that says - rise and shine mother cluckers - below a 3D rooster?
    3. Mostly fiction books, many from Oprah's book club from the 90's; some self-help books including a shelf of bereavement books; some non-fiction - currently reading The Emoeror of All Maladies by Siddartha Mukherjee.
    4. The VCR and VHS Disney tapes, obsolete now never mind 50 yrs from now. And then there are the cassette music tapes collecting dust in the basement.

    1. OK we must introduce my chimp to your 3-d rooster!
I finally got rid of some old cassette tapes since I have nothing to play them with and any of the old songs I can now find on Spotify.

  9. After 50 years I'm sure they'd wonder at the amount of dust in my house. I don't live on a very busy street but I certainly get more than my share of dust.
They'd know that I have cats because of the various toys and other items around the house...along with the cat hair.
When I did my first decluttering after retirement (another is due this winter) I got rid of my bookshelves and most of my books. Currently there is a box of books in my bedroom that contains what remained along with the more current books I've read. Mostly mysteries, historical fiction, and true crime.
I have extra bedding too in my closets as my spare bed, that was over 20 years old, went to the dump a few years ago. But I think the closet that would make them wonder most is my craft closet. It's packed with yarn, fabric, paints, scrapbook paper, etc.

If the Humane Society won't take the pillows perhaps a crafter would. The stuffing might be used to make toys and other decorative items.

    1. Oh I didn't even begin to think about all the art supplies I have.I just need to do a major cull of everything.

  10. You have a carved chimpanzee? I'm jealous! Anyone who visited our house in 50 years would assume cats lived there -- kitty toys everywhere, and although we just have one cat, she sheds a lot so there's kitty fur everywhere (clean it up, turn around, and there's twice as much).

    1. It is fun to imagine what one would notice if someone from a different time just walked through our front doors. I should walk through my house and really pay attention to everything instead of just looking at the familiar.
The chimp is one of my favorite things at the house. Plus he is utilitarian. When either TheHub or I have to leave something important for the other we know "It's on the monkey"

  11. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your answers. Would love to see your house in person. I didn't play along this week. Take care.

  12. In this house, people would wonder why a bomb was detonated. In my house the first reaction was about the beautiful stairs and the glow from the window that penetrated the whole staircase. That was what won me over when we looked at the house. People would comment on the eclectic nature of my decorating and all the antique lamps. They would notice my sewing machines if they stepped into another room.

  13. I always watch people's reactions when they come to my house for the first time. Most look around, but they say nothing or sometimes they'll say it's "cute," which I find insulting for some reason. Only one person that came to visit me said they really loved my house.
    1. I have a lot of colorful abstract art on the walls, so that's probably the first thing the time travelers would notice and
    2. they would conclude that I was probably an artist or art lover.
    3. We got rid of almost all our books except for a few and they are art books. lol.
    4. I really don't have anything unusual in my cabinets that I can think of, but I do have an inconceivable amount of headwraps. Not sure what they would make of that. lol.

  14. I don't mind hearing cute as a term for my house. I don't want a beautiful house! I want my house to seem livable.
Abstracts are wonderful. The art on my walls is primarily faces. I love faces!
