Keto Quick Start Review

Tuesday-Saturday I did a brutal quick start to get myself back in a state of ketosis. I followed this to the letter, using just a couple of the recommended substitutions.

Each morning I had  3 cups of black coffee with the last coffee of the morning being the bullet proof coffee I typically drink my coffee black with no sweetener so the bulletproof coffee is a little thicker than I really care for, but I drank it anyway.
Later in the morning early afternoon I had my breakfast. 2 hard scrambled eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and 1/2 of a small avocado. Since I do not care for eggs, the breakfast was not particularly tasty so I saved the bacon for last to end the deal with deliciousness.

The morning of day 1 I made the soup which is the daily meal for both lunch and dinner. It is basically a chicken and veggie soup in a clear chicken broth. Aldi had a great price on cauliflower so it was substituted it for the celery root, and the pack of collards in the freezer replaced the Swiss chard. I did forget to put the green beans in  it though.
Oh well. It was still soup and I don't think just the added green beans would have enhanced the flavor greatly.

The plan also suggested tuna salad and egg salad for daily snacks. I can choke down scrambled eggs but there is absolutely no way I am ever going to voluntarily eat egg salad. I do like tuna but not just plain tuna salad. Add a few crackers or put it in a sandwich and all is good. Not allowed with this though. Fortunately since I do like coffee, the daily snack option of another bullet proof coffee worked well. I did use decaf for an after dinner "snack". That term is in quotes and loosely used because there is nothing remotely snacky about coffee with butter and mct oil. Snacks should either crunch ( like potato chips) or or melt (like chocolate)

Did it work? Yes, and better than I thought it would. I was able to get into ketosis in 3 days and dropped weight every day. I am pretty sure it was just water weight since the physics of weight loss mandates you have to lose the water before losing the fat. Plus my one hour bladder was working overtime for a few days.
Other than  telling TheHub and My Beloved Sister I will not say how many pounds disappeared but let's just say it was better than I expected. But still don't ask, OK!

I never experienced real hunger, but my mouth wanted lots more. The first couple of days I wanted chips or popcorn really bad. At  day 3 cravings began for some cheese or meat and some kind of veggie. The last two days I really wanted diet ginger ale and salad, but I did not cave at all.

I have all the ingredients to make another pot of the soup and intend to make it Monday. It will be portioned into 10 meal size container for the freezer. Right now I plan to do this diet one day a week, and if there is a plateau lasting over two weeks, I will do the whole plan again. So please keep your fingers crossed that it does not happen!

I would recommend this to anyone who needed a quick reset. The biggest help for me was having leftovers and a partner willing to completely fend for himself. I don't think I could have been successful if I had to make food for him. And even though my meals were not great, we were still able to sit at the table together, eat, and have dinnertime conversations.

And I am so damned glad it is over!

  1. I just think I have too little will power to even make a decent start. Congratulations to you.

    2. I'm with Sam - no willpower here either! But well done to you!

  2. Congratulations, you are a stronger woman than I am. I've always been good about sticking with a plan if I want to take off weight, but I've always said keto is one I could never do, and especially not that kickstart plan. I can sure understand why your glad it's over and I'm glad for you too!

    1. For me keto is pretty easy after I get into it, but the first few days are difficult.

    1. I was really just hoping to make it the full five days staying one target, and was very glad it succeeded.

  4. You are brave, friend! I would be fine with the breakfast, unclear if I could hack the coffee, and love soup for lunch. But, then I'd be prancing through the kitchen every few minutes, opening cupboards & just looking for anything to snack on.

    1. The coffee is definitely not my favorite thing, but it is not repulsive. The breakfast was very filling and the soup for lunch was fine. I just wanted something more substantial for dinner.

  5. Okay, I finally figured out what MCT oil is. The coffee sounds gross. But, I love scrambled eggs cooked like I like them. It would add a lot to the story to know how much you lost. It cannot be so much we would be horrified you had that weight to lose. Good luck on your journey.

    1. Lol I never thought anyone would be horrified. I just have two people in my life that know everything about me.

  6. you did a great job!
I'd be happy to eat scrambled eggs and avo for breakfast but I'd be a bit over soup after about two meals.
I'm wondering how you know you got into ketosis?

    1. They sell keto strips which require a careful aim and a small sample. If the tip turns pink you are there. If it stays yellow you aren't .

  7. Thanks for this detail! Even before Keto was a thing I was a disciple of Atkins, but I can't envision myself having the willpower to do this cleanse. Thanks for the coffee reminder! I used to enjoy making Ree Drummond's 'Crazy Coffee.' Basically, it's the same thing, only with coconut oil v. MCT. Even my husband - after he quit making disparaging remarks - allowed it was pretty good.

    1. I actually like the Atkins soup and sometime will make it just because we enjoy it. The MCT oil I have is a coconut oil product. It is fine but is not how I prefer my coffee. I am a straight up black coffee gal.

  8. I can't imagine eating that restricted a diet! I know that the keto/atkins/etc. type of diet works (and has been published/publicized in some form for a century), but it just sounds wrong to me, a victim of balanced eating propaganda.

  9. Congratulations on surviving that week. I'm not sure that I could do it. The breakfast and soup would be ok, but I don't like coffee and that concoction sounds gross.
I did the beachbody thingy about 5 years ago with a friend, and lost some weight, and their shakes weren't too disgusting. I didn't end up with a beach body though, and I don't think my joints could handle those exercise videos now. :)

    1. 5 days is about all I could handle. The coffee is not my favorite but it is not the worst either!
