Tuesday4

Annie@Tuesday 4 has once again asked 4 questions, this time calling it odds and ends. Come on and join in!

I thought since the first question was about gem stones a song by Saffire the Uppity Blues Women would be appropriate

1. Do you have a favorite gem stone?
I love sapphires and have a gorgeous sapphire ring that I never wear. When I was younger I loved jewelry but now I never wear gems other than my wedding ring. I suppose I will save the ring and pass it on to Pip at some time.
Why is it a favorite.
I had a sapphire jewelry a kid. It is my birthstone, but mainly I just loved the color blue.

2. Do you know and  understand the doctrines of your religious faith? I am Christian by faith and as anyone knows, the doctrines of Christianity are all over the place, from very liberal theology to painfully conservative narrow beliefs.
I do know the disciplines of the Methodist church (My chosen denomination). I agree with some and disagree with some, but I figure I am never going to find perfection in organized religion.
If you are not religious, do you have a personal doctrine you believe and live?
And even though I am religious I also have a personal doctrine that I heard years ago from one of our ministers that I try my best to live by:
"It is a blessing to be a blessing."

3. Do you have a favorite décor style... as in classical, traditional, modern, mid century, colonial, etc?
I like an eclectic look with a mix of styles. I like color and mixed patterns but I am not keen on florals. I also like to have things around me that amuse me. (The monkey butler in particular, or the giraffe applying lipstick while sitting in a stiletto )
If I ever had a house that was all one style (and if I could afford it) I would choose a mid century modern look, but that would also require a house that was a mid century modern design also. (Not at all how I live )

4. Are  there any books or movies you want to see this summer?
I have not been to the movies since December before Covid so I have no idea what is coming out. Mom was still alive and flu season had just begun here, and we decided to wait until after that so we would not accidentally carry flu to her. Little did we know then that the world would be changing in about the time we intended to resume going to the theater.
I am not a seasonal reader. I juggle books and read from the library selection of e-books. I can always find something to read, so I can wait until any new release becomes a little older.
This summer instead of concentrating on books and movies I just want to swim, cook outside, have people over, and see my family.

  1. I grew up in the Methodist church and enjoyed what I learned in Sunday School. For the past 30 years I have been attending a community church through the Assemblies of God. We have been to several movies. You are suppose to ear a mask until seated. Some do and some don't. Ther is a lot of space between seats. My husband and I go during the week and the place is empty!

    1. If TheHub had retired we could go in the middle of the day sometime mid-week and I would feel comfortable, but that is not our reality right now.

  2. Fun questions!
I'm with you, I don't wear much jewelry anymore except for my wedding ring. I used to like rubies though since it is my birthstone.
Love your "blessing to be a blessing."
My faith is important to me although it has changed in some ways through the years. I was a born and raised Baptist, but became a Methodist when I got married. A little disappointed in the hypocrisy of some who call themselves Christians but who don't follow Christ teachings "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
I'm an eclectic decorator with some furniture from relatives who have passed on, to some craigslist furnishings. Most of our furniture is used, ranging in age from 150 years old to 20+ years old. :D
Honestly I can't think of any movies that I want to see this summer. Hoping we can take our son to Disneyworld to celebrate his college graduation, but that will depend on the virus.

    1. Hopefully the mutations will lessen rather than strengthen. I fully intend to get out and about a little right now while the infection rates are low, just in case things change in a few weeks like they have one in the past.

  3. Great responses to all questions! Another "sapphire" lady!! It seems to be the top favorite I've seen so far. I also love your "personal doctrine".."It is a blessing to be a blessing." I love that idea! I am also a "Methodist", but our little church is very conservative and we sing old fashioned hymns as well as contemporary praise songs. We are a very happy group of people who love Jesus and good Bible preaching...we don't look much a like a typical Methodist church. Some people lovingly say we are a "Metho-bapticostal" LOL. Thank you for participating with this today. It was very interesting!!

    1. My church is rather large with different services for those who prefer different types of worship. We prefer the traditional liturgy so that is what we choose, but there is also what we call Rock church for those who prefer a contemporary service.

  4. Sapphire comes in so many colors and one of my favorites is the orange or pale peach padparascha which is very rare. I like that "it is a blessing to be a blessing"...how true that is.
Thanks so much for joining in.

    1. I try to remember the blessing thing everyday. Though some days I may not follow it as well as I do other days.

  5. I love rubies but I don’t have any… lol! Just like Kim of “Out my Window” blog, I am LDS (Mormon) but I am not strict nor do I follow the tenants. My ex husband was Catholic and the kids were raised in that faith. I have no idea what movies are out. My little retirement house was built in 1950 so I have a tendency to want to decorate with that time period in mind. But really, I am hopeless at decorating so it is a total mismatch… lol. 1. When I was younger I loved jewelry, but as I had gotten older it is mainly a nuisance .
I think it would be fun to do a 50's house in a 50's style!

  6. It's fun to get to know you a bit more with each Tuesday post. I don't know what my favorite gemstone is-probably a pearl, but that's not really a stone. I do like diamonds, but I too am not a big jewelry gal.

    1. I am so simple that a lot of jewelry makes me feel like a "painted" lady.

  7. 1. My birthstone is the diamond, but I love the ruby. As a four-year old, my sister gave me a red stone, and I've loved rubies ever since. I have a lot of jewelry, rubies included, but do not wear it--my daily life is dangerous to jewelry.
    2. I fully know and understand the tenets of my faith. I had the good fortune to be raised in old-fashioned secular humanism. I do attend an Episcopal church (when I go) for the liturgy--which I also understand intimately, given the close familial relationship of a priest. Give me the smells, bells, and strength to love my neighbor as myself, and I'm in.
    3. Traditional eclectic is how I describe my style. I like my furnishings to be substantial, and well made.
    4. I have a loooong list of books I wish to read, but not movies. I am anxiously awaiting the final season of "Better Call Saul."

    1. Rubies are gorgeous.
We never watched Better Call Saul, but everyone I know who has got hooked on it. It is on our list to watch.

  8. Great questions and answers! My favorite gem stones include topaz as it is my birthstone. I do know and understand the doctrines of my religion and I like your personal doctrine, too! I like many decorating styles and no particular movies I want to watch or books I want to read this summer.

    1. My take on books is to just read whatever appeals to me at the moment. I can always find something I want to read.

  9. My favorite gemstone is the blue sapphire since it is my birthstone. It was round and was surrounded by diamonds. I gave it to my younger daughter when she graduated from college. I really want a garnet, a semi-precious stone.

I have eclectic taste. If I like it, it goes with the rest of my stuff. I have a favorite floral tapestry that everything else matches. I love "brown" furniture and would never paint it. Mostly, I had antiques, and still have a few I rescued. I only have antique lamps, floor lamps and table lamps that I have had refinished and rewired. I made the lampshades. I like fringe, lace and gimp.

Mostly, I like classics or reference-type books. Right now, I have a book on moths to read and one about salt. Not many new authors interest me.

I will answer the religion question tomorrow as The Cheyenne Social Club is about to come on tv.

  10. Hmmm let's see:

    1. I love pearls and blue sapphires. Pearl is my birthstone.
    2. I am not religious. My personal doctrine is "Be honest and help others as much as you can". 3. As for decorating, I love a mixture of Colonial and Country style.
    4. I have 8 books lined up to read. My favorite genres are: Crime and Mystery, World War II and some Sci-Fi. I am looking forward to the new Dowton Abbey movie although I do not think I will be going to a movie theater anytime soon. I am also hoping for a new Star Trek movie.

    1. Pearls are beautiful. I had a gorgeous pearl ring that I never wore so I gave it to a neighbors pre-teen daughter. I like to think that gift influenced her career choice since she is now a jewelry designer. I would actually like to buy one of her pieces, but they are fine jewelry pieces with fine jewelry prices

  11. It's been ages since I've seen a movie! We haven't even streamed one in a long time. Reading is my primary entertainment, and like you I can always find something to read. :-)

  12. When we moved back to Memphis when I was eleven-years-old, we started going to a church where Memphis Christian College, a newly formed college, was meeting. I did not realize it, but the young men studying there were our Sunday School teachers and youth ministers. Later, I realized we had all received excellent instruction that was part of their classes during the week. Therefore, I received and retained much instruction about the Bible and religion.

When I graduated from high school, I enrolled there. By this time, they had a building. I attended two years then enrolled at Memphis State University.

Wehn I was in my sophomore year at MCC, I met my husband. He would always call me with Bible questions. I even wrote a sermon for him as he did not understand the several aspects of the Holy Spirit. He denies this...lol.

I can answer all your questions about the facts in the Bible now, but I am over "religion." The professors stressed that we should question what we hear. I learned the lesson well. As for a personal philosophy, I believe in doing what is right whether anyone is watching or not. Honesty and helping others is important for my inner peace.

  13. You had great answers to all these questions. We have not been to a movie in forever. I Loved the song you shared but I love music . I read books more in the colder months. I started reading Elizabeth Caddell, an older book series and some are hard to find or very expensive. We have a big phamily so we do lots of outdoor activities in the summer months. we watch our two little grandsons often on a Saturday for a few hours to give mom and dad a break. They are such a precious gift.I love Jesus and have since I was in Catholic school in the second grade. I realized no saint was helping me solve any problems I had. I never told my mother either. But Jesus has been at my side through loss, illness, you name it, He is there. I am not a traditional church person. We do attend a church but often do the videos. We aren't much for huge crowds and my husband still works and has been "essential" since 2020 and all this started. Now the masses have come back in the dead of winter, all the attorneys, support staff. He liked the small crew he works with 17 people. They had a good attitude, worked hard and stayed healthy. Plus many of his co workers are prayerful men & women so he has that kindness. I hope your remaineder of this week is a great one and you have many blessings surrounding you. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you for playing along. TheHub was considered "essential" also and worked straight through the pandemic quarantine. Fortunately his office is in a remote section of the building and only four people have offices near that area, so he was pretty well isolated. We feel very fortunate.
