July Garden Yield

I decided I would keep a list of our actual harvest this year. We have a very small suburban  gardening space but have various things planted in pots and containers all around the yard, I am excluding herbs from the totals since I grab them  to use in cooking, or dry them in small batches to keep for later use.

June Harvest:
yellow squash -9
zucchini -8
cucumber- not producing yet, so far all the blossoms are make flowers
bell pepper -7
banana pepper- 13
cayenne pepper-4
green beans -8  pounds
tomato -some still green, 1 dead plant, others still questionable
cherry tomato-9
radish- chipmunks delight
potato- not yet time to dig
lettuce- I am evidently growing this only to feed critters
okra- not yet producing but looking really healthy
apples- 2 are still on the trees, but I have serious doubts about them becoming ripe. though we do have some seriously happy squirrels
pears- zilch. I am thinking of getting rid of the pear trees. They are not pretty trees and never have more than a handful of blossoms.

July Harvest: It seems Little Bunny Foo Foo and/or Groundhog Gertie have found our raised bed!

yellow squash- 9

zucchini- 3 (Pulling the zucchini up. Still debating replanting it or not)

cucumber- 0. So far all the blossoms have been male blossoms

bell pepper- 11

banana pepper- 21

cayenne pepper- 10

green beans-  81/2 pounds I am not keeping up with this anymore for July. We averaged 1 1/2 pounds of green beans per day.

tomato-3

cherry tomato- 25

potato   I think one plant is ready to dig will do it this week

okra  8 pods, but it is blooming and growing like crazy. Fingers crossed it will produce well in August.

apples  Anne-1 / squirrels-20ish

pears The tree must have heard me talking about cutting it down. I found 3 pears on it

Not replanting the radishes or lettuce. Chip and Dale are on their own.

And now on to August!

Soon we are going to have to think about planting a fall garden. Harvesting in the fall sounds delightful

  1. You examine blossoms for gender. Do tell. The Romaine and other green things were the only things safe in our yard last year! Too bad that talking loudly about the critters doesn't discourage them. I put out plastic snakes last year and birds stayed away.

    1. The male blossoms do no produce, so yes we do look to see if we have potential cucumbers. We may have planted them a bit to late since the female blossoms evidently like cooler weather.

  3. You are getting a lovely harvest from your garden! I think I picked almost 2 lbs. of green beans before I pulled out most of the plants! Those beans didn't do well at all! But, I picked more than enough zucchini to make up for it! :D

    1. We have been lucky for the most part, and have had enough rain that we are not having to water much at all.

  5. Considering you are feeding the critters, you're getting a nice harvest.

    1. I think they are only partial to apples, squash, lettuce and radishes this year.

  6. You have done really well with your garden. Mine has been pretty much a disaster this year as we have had so much rain and very little sunshine. Even now our temperatures are nowhere near July/August temperatures!

    1. Our tomatoes are doing nothing but growing then splitting. I am sure the excessive rain is the culprit. We had a mild June and first week of July, but we are making up for it now. It is hot and steamy.

    1. We are going to have to seriously rethink our green bean numbers next year.

  8. Very nice! Wouldn't you try grafting the pear trees instead of getting rid of them? We used to have a sweet cherry tree but, the cherries were not really good so, my grandpa had grafted that tree from his sweet yellow cherry. I still miss those cherries.

  9. Oh my goodness, you've had quite the harvest. And it's not done yet. Do Chip and Dale like green beans?

    1. Evidently neither chipmunks, rabbits nor groundhogs lie green beans.

  11. Great harvest in spite of feeding Chip and Dale, little Bunny foo foo, Groundhog Gertie, and I'll name the squirrel Slappy.
I'm enjoying fresh tomatoes, so I am happy.

    1. The cherry tomato plant is going great guns, but the regular tomatoes are so water saturated they are just growing and splitting before they ripen. It s a bummer because I love tomatoes.

  12. You are doing really well. I'm no gardener but we have had cherry tomatoes come up from compost may times, always a bumper crop!
Enjoy all the lovely freshness :)
