Grumpy Me

I am grumpy right now. My mom used to call it being "ill as a hornet".  I think it is because my plans have derailed and there is nothing I can do but wait___and I am not a good waiter! I want things done and I want them done NOW!  I remind myself of Varunca Salt from Willie Wonka.

Meanwhile my chandelier in the dining room is still resting on a ladder to support it so it won't pull the sheetrock from the ceiling, waiting for the handyman who can't get here until Tuesday__after three! I thought the economy was tanking, but I can't get the people I want to pay with real money to come here. So I wait, and wait, then wait a little more. The good news is I did get the carpet guy to come and stretch the carpet in the Jack and Jill bedrooms upstairs. Since they actually did respond to my call and came in a reasonable time they get a pass for being here at 8 a.m. on a Saturday. They were nice guys and did a great job.

If I can get a little bit more done today, I am sure my mood will improve. So much to do__so many decorations.

And now for a Christmas sighting Day 5:.This little coffee service sits on the buffet and is normally a sad and tarnished grouping. When we were cleaning Mom’s house I claimed the teapot that went with her set. My sister does not drink tea so she was fine with it. It sat on my tray and over a few months became almost as tarnished as its tray mates but when I heard the sounds of Christmas approaching I knew it was time to look under the sink and pull out the Wrights silver cream.

The coffee set looked the worst so I polished them first, then started to shine  Mom’ s teapot. I took the top off then started laughing as I pulled 6 black knee hi’s out of it.
For a couple of years before she died Mom would call my sister and me and accuse us of taking her things. Since we began cleaning her house we found tons of the things (in very odd places)1? we had “stolen”. I know she never accused me of taking her knee hi’s so it must have been my beloved sister.

  1. I love the silver service! Since I drink neither coffee nor tea, I got rid of mine. I love love love to polish silver. I think I might have been a servant in a past life. Either that or a wealthy Southerner who did not trust people with her silver. I suspect a servant.

That falling chandelier would drive me nuts.

I was talking to a friend in Cullman and was complaining I could not find anyone to do things at my yard, that it seemed like people did not want to work. He said he had the same problem. Then, I talked to a prominent businessman who said, "You have no idea how hard it is for me to get anyone to work lately. (no close contact at all) And he said, the ones he hires don't work out often.

  2. I need to polish our (very few) silver pieces before Christmas.
I hear you on tradespeople not turning up. It happens here too. Just the same a few days ago a plumber DID turn up, did an excellent job and charged us very little. Which is now so rare I want to shout it from the rooftops.

    1. I need to polish the rest of it along with the flatware, but I can't get to the cabinet where the silver lives because the dining room table is shoved to the side of the room blocking the entry to the china cabinet. And why is it to the side. To make room for the support ladder of course!

  3. I'm sorry you have to wait for people to come out and fix things. Waiting is hard, isn't it? But, your silver coffee and tea service is beautiful! You've reminded me that I've a couple of very tarnished pieces that should be cleaned...some day!

  6. Sounds to me like the knee highs were a gift from your mom to lighten up your day. Your silver grouping is gorgeous.

  7. When I want something done I want it done NOW too (just to tick it off my to do list I guess) so I get your frustration. And I just love that tea service. It's beautiful - knee highs and all. When my brother died I was sorting through some beautiful china his wife had. I took a very delicate teacup and saucer and in one of the pots I found a bunch of white feathers. I guess you know what I mean. I reckon he was collecting them after his wife died and keeping them in the china pot!

    1. It is kind of fun to find something totally unexpected. There are no birds with white feathers here, but one day, shortly after Dad dies I was digging in the back yard and found a gorgeous one. Naturally I still have it, somewhere__maybe in a teapot?

  9. Tradesmen, with skills, seem to be in high demand. I don't think I have any silver-it would surely be tarnished.

    1. I know for certain she had some reason for putting them there. At some point she might have decided the teapot was her lingerie chest. Who knows?

    1. More than a smile. I laughed out loud and had to call my sister to share the laughs.
